Newport’s Church on the Roundabout – which has housed a foodbank for some 12 years – has been told they can no longer provide the provision to the local community. Taking to their Facebook page to share the news, Church on the Roundabout said the decision followed an IW Foodbank risk assessment in which it was deemed that making deliveries on site was too dangerous, given its location on Coppins Bridge – arguably the busiest road on the Island. 1 of 5 foodbanks on the Island, the Newport Town Centre branch had been operating for some 12 years, so for this decision to be made such a long way down the line was a surprise to many. A location for the benefit of not just Newport residents, but Islanders alike is being sounded out, it is understood. A Church on the Roundabout spokesperson has said:
“This was news that we were not expecting to have to announce. “We thought this was a problem that could be worked through.”
An Isle of Wight Foodbank spokesperson has said:
“The Isle of Wight Foodbank would like to thank the Church for its support over the last 12 years. “The Isle of Wight Foodbank team are working hard to find a replacement centre in Newport, meanwhile voucher holders can still collect their food from one of our other centres in Ryde, Cowes and The Bay, details of which can be found at isleofwight.foodbank.org.uk
“Once a suitable location is found we will provide an update.”
The foodbank is to be open to the community until the end of play today (Friday 23rd February).

This cult meeting place is an eyesore. Close it.
12 years to decide its not safe and shut it down without finding a replacement site for it. Smacks of stupidity to me
When a family of hard working people, where both parents work more than one job, still have to go to food banks, we have a serious problem. Most of the hard working nurses at the hospital are having to also work second jobs to keep their home. That is utterly insane!!!
Now wait for the usual suspects making comments about people turning up at foodbanks in new BMWs, clutching the latest iPhone.
The worrying thing is, what are these weirdos doing hanging around foodbanks to see who is using them?
If you can’t afford your home, just sell it and move somewhere that you can afford. Mortgage rates are not going to miraculously decrease to almost zero. The period of very low mortgage rates was an extremely unusual blip and we are now back to normality. People need to wise up and realise that if they can’t afford to pay their bills and mortgage, then their mortgage is too expensive for them. Of course, there is nothing wrong with taking a second job for extra money. Plenty of us have worked second jobs in the past. But people need to understand that mortgage rates will not be going down. I find it disgraceful that someone thinks it is acceptable to go to a food bank to effectively subsidise their mortgage on a £400k house.
Welcome to Hot Take From Hell.
How many NHS staff do you know bar Consultants with a 400k mortgage get real, do the Island a favour get out there talk to people and don’t expect ridiculous comments like that to garner you any favours apart from the tiny true Blue minority who still think “seldon seen is their saviour” “Silly Johnny”!
On 35K a year and pension.Really?
You are talking rubbish, nurses are band 5 and band 6, some even higher. and are on very good wages. They earn good money. I know, I was there for 27 years. It’s time to end the myth that nurses are on low wages.
Really please point me in that direction obviously on the wrong ward!. If wages are so wonderful how is it take up too be a nurse in UK us down 50%?pay and conditions perhaps life on an NHS ward at the moment is sheer bloody hard work, did you come back for Covid? Or just happy being a keyboard warrior?!
I worked right through civic, caught it twice. Keyboard warriors? Kettle black.
it is insane especially when the government are giving billions on foreign aid and illegal immigrants. This isn’t how our taxes should be spent.
Foreign aid is significantly less than the 0.7% we are supposed to pay but never have. And illegal immigrants receiving billions? Illegal immigrants get nothing but £35 and a prison hulk. If you concerned about the concept of the ‘undeserving’ getting something you think you’re entitled to, try having a look at tax avoidance schemes for the rich, that really does run into billions. Actually, 4.5 trillion of untaxed money siphoned offshore. See if you can work out the revenue before you comment next.
Illegal immigrants get nothing but £35 and a prison hulk
freeloading parasites that have travelled through countless safe countries to turn up here don’t deserve anything from us, except a one way ticket back to where they came from.
we do not want the freeloaders here and if do gooders like you karen disagree, well why don’t you go and join them as we don’t want your kind here either.
My kind? What, human being? I’m so glad I’m not you.
Food banks – something that the Tories are proud of! Low wages equals more money at the top. Time to get them out
Perhaps London second home socialists in Yarmouth Seaview and Bembridge can put their hands in their pockets and bail it out.
I think this is terrible.
How can you afford to go to some of the other places on the Island, if you need a food bank. This should not have been closed, until another venue, in Newport, could be opened.
I feel very sorry for people who rely on food banks, mostly through no fault of their own. The governments, both Labour and Conservative, of this country, should be utterly ashamed of themselves.
It is the past and present policies of both parties that have helped create this travesty.
Doesn’t seem to me that the parking for deliveries is too difficult to obviate. How about a small layby in the grassy area on the road leaving the roundabout that you can see in the picture?
Too small for a BMW or Range Rover…
You could park a Tesco lorry there.
Because stopping on a roundabout is fucking illegal!
even shutting down food banks now…. Bob Seeley should hang his head in shame…….. it seems in the UK the only banks open under the Conservatives are food banks….. now even this is
debankedSafety fanatics are ruining everything bit by bit.
