The Isle of Wight community has rallied around to raise £500 for an elderly male who was recently attacked and robbed of his pension money in Ryde.
Local taxi driver Paul Floyd set up the fundraiser at the tail end of last week with the aim of raising £100 to help the man in his 70s.
It’s said that the unnamed pensioner was walking down the High Street, near to St Mary’s Passage, late at night after enjoying a drink at Wetherspoons. It was here that he was robbed of £100.
The matter has been reported to the Police.
Taking to the GoFundMe page, Paul said:
“The couple are already struggling with bills and the cost of living, and after this attack the man is now unsure about leaving the house again. He wouldn’t usually carry that amount of money round with him, especially at night, but that’s beside the point”.
The crowdfunder has been so successful it has exceeded the £100 sought by 5 times, with Paul now closing the donations page saying:
“Thank you so much everyone, I’m in disbelief but equally amazed and grateful at how generous everyone has been!
“I’m going to end the fundraiser now as I think the current amount is already more than enough to put a huge smile on the faces of my good friends, they’ll be overwhelmed!”

Well done everyone .but Wetherspoons on pension day then robbed?
Why shouldn’t he have a drink in wetherspoons on pension day, if it weren’t for the career unemployed half the pubs in ryde would be bankrupt within a month, the difference is he probably worked for his pension whilst they contribute nothing.
What a lovely end to an all too familiar story!! Well done paul and all who contributed to help this man out in his time of crisis!!! You truly are “SAINT PAUL”
Just goes to show that there are good people in this world.
Shame on the scumbag that commited this crime .
Well done to the friend who organised the go fund me page.
Hope this gentleman and wife are alright.
Typical scumbags picking on the elderly and frail to fund their weak willed lifestyle of drink and drugs no doubt. I would say get a life, but you have all ready been given one which you have chosen to waste on causing others harm and distress. Shame on you scumbag!
Well done to the decent people of this world for helping out.
Oh and Fred your comments don’t put you in a good light. But that’s Fred for you!
Absolute low life cowardly scum, I hope your head implodes
