The Isle of Wight’s Community Continence team has been shortlisted for a 2022 Nursing Times award.
This team has been shortlisted in the ‘Continence Promotion and Care’ category for its outstanding work on a ‘Bowel Care Passport’ for patients with a spinal injury.
The Bowel Care Passport was developed to improve the experience of patients with spinal injuries who require bowel care as part of their daily routine and, when admitted to hospital, ensures that they receive the bowel care they require.
The document, which is kept by the patient, is also flagged on the hospital’s electronic system.
Alison Spearman, Community Matron/Continence Service Team Lead, says:
“I am absolutely thrilled to see our community continence team shortlisted for this national award that recognises nursing excellence.
“There are over 50,000 people living with a spinal injury in the UK. The team has gone above and beyond to develop this important process to help those who have been through a life-changing event. This passport supports our aim to enable those who need it to receive the necessary compassionate care and support to maintain dignity and live well with their condition.
“We are delighted to have been recognised in this way however the most important part is how we can use the passport to improve our patient care.”
