Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council’s litter project kicked off to a flying start with a massive 32 bags of rubbish being collected at Downside Recreation Ground.
Nappies, broken glass, tins and wrappers were amongst the items found by the 18 people in attendance. Members of the public, Vectis Wombles, Newport & Carisbrooke councillors and staff, Pan Together and local PCSO’s joined in with the mammoth pick.
Special thanks go to the 5 young people who joined in – Dennis, Leoni, William, Eden and Finley and also thanks to Biffa who collected the bags afterwards.
Leader of Vectis Wombles ‘Womble Wendy’ Marshall said:
“It’s been a pleasure for Vectis Wombles to help Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council. Wombles from across the island came together and it was great getting to know people in the community including young people and the PCSO’s. There were all walks of life, all ages and the weather was spot on!”
Their attendance at the litter pick comes straight off the back of Vectis Wombles winning silver in the New Community Project of the Year category at the Vectis Radio Awards on 30th March 2023.
Councillor for Pan & Barton Geoff Brodie said:
“It was an enjoyable morning and a superb collective effort cleared a mountain of litter. The five young people who came along were particularly welcomed and the Wombles were, as ever, total stars. Hopefully people may respect the effort in the coming weeks. “
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“It has been shown that areas within the community with higher levels of littering are also those which suffer more antisocial behaviour, often because they look neglected and in a state of disrepair. We were happy to meet residents and get involved and it was a fantastic effort by all everyone!”

What a vile disgusting country we live in.
Why aren’t the people that are given community service punishments doing this?
Seems like a joke!
I don’t commit crime to clean you fool
Are they demolishing Pan? That should clean up the area quite nicely.
Well done Womble ladies. As for community service doing this that’s a no go as it would humiliate them !!
Same as most of bin collections in Newport, there’s always litter flying around after they have been! Don’t get me wrong it’s a worthless job for them as most humans don’t help with their own rubbish.
Big hand to the girls, great job..
I want DNA done on every piece of rubbish. Shouldn’t be too hard to trace the owners because they all have criminal records on Pan Estate. Might get tricky with the well-known incest issue on the estate but close is good enough. Then ship them off to Saudi to have their hands chopped off. Perfect end to a perfect day.
32 bin bags of rubbish collected from one recreation ground in Pan?
What a disgusting place, but sort of living up to its reputation.
