UPDATED: Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor are this evening (Monday) working alongside Police to recover the body of a person from the foot of Culver Cliff.
The discovery of what is believed to be a handbag at the top of Culver Down sparked an emergency response by Police earlier this afternoon, which led to the National Police Air Support helicopter launching to search the area for signs of anyone on the rocks below.
Unfortunately, it is understood the body of a person was located by the air crew at around 18:00. Coastguard Rescue Teams are now working their way along Yaverland Beach to reach the deceased.
UPDATED @ 19:40 – The body of a woman discovered on the rocks at the foot of Culver has now been recovered by Coastguard teams and transferred to a private ambulance.
Emergency services have now left the scene at Yaverland. An investigation into the incident is now underway.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 08:34 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has this morning confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.
The body is yet to be formally identified, although has been confirmed as that of a woman.
