UPDATED: The return of the Shanklin Cliff Lift to service has been delayed once again, due to circumstances beyond the Isle of Wight Council’s control.
A health and safety inspection scheduled to take place today (Tuesday) will now be held tomorrow (Wednesday) instead. The 24-hour delay is said to be because the inspection company are unable to send the required officer due to an emergency call-out on the mainland overnight.
Unfortunately, the Isle of Wight Council cannot open the lift until the health and safety inspection has been completed.
According to a spokesperson, the Council remain very hopeful the lift will be opened once the inspection has been completed.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: The Shanklin Cliff Lift will open from 09:00 tomorrow (Thursday 30th July) after a required health and safety inspection was completed today.
The Council say they remain committed to a permanent replacement bridge. In May this year, members of the Council’s Executive approved proposals to spend over £700,000 on long-term repairs at the lift, including installing a permanent footbridge and replacing the lift’s plant machinery.
