The Isle of Wight Council has provided further information about traffic arrangements for next week’s Tour of Britain after road signs were put out along the race route over the weekend.
The signs give motorists advance warning of the road closures that are required during the race on Sunday 11th September to ensure the safety of riders and spectators. The signs also provide a reminder that cars need to be removed from the course well before the race starts.
However, the road closure time on the signs (11:00 to 15:30) is the overall period within which a rolling road closure will be in place. This rolling road closure itself will be for a maximum of up to 30 minutes to an hour — much shorter than the timings shown in the notice.
Alex Minns, the council’s assistant director for neighbourhoods, said:
“Because it is a live sporting event, it is difficult to predict the exact times during which the rolling road closures will come into effect. Therefore, the official road closure is for a general period within which we are confident the race will be completed. In reality, the actual road closure will be much shorter than the general time shown on the signs.”
Only the start and finish points, Ryde seafront and the section between Chale and the Needles will be subject to longer road closures. No clarity has been given as to why signs have been placed on Staplers Road and Fairlee Road in Newport, as neither road are included on the race route.
The signs also highlight the need for cars to be removed from the race route from 00:01 and 23:59 on 11th September. The council is however asking that residents move their cars from 18:00 on Saturday 10th September, although they will be allowed to park on the route again once the race has finished.
Alex adds:
“The signs show the legal times when a clearway will be in place and therefore cars will have to be removed. But obviously if residents are able to move their cars earlier then it would be really helpful — that’s why we have asked them to move them from 6pm on Saturday 10. In reality, they will also be able to return their cars to the clearway once the race has ended.”
Cars left on the race route during the clearway period will be towed away.

More cyclists causing disruption for motorists on our roads!
They are not “YOUR” roads.
I pay my road tax. They are my roads! Bikes don’t pay road tax, but this is big government attacking me.
I owe everyone an apology, Road tax doesn’t exist. We all pay for the roads with council tax, cyclists actually subsidise car drivers because they are less damaging to the asphalt.

It would be funny to see tax per weight of a vehicle.
Even more funny if the lycra brigade were also taxed per weight of the rider judging by the sights you see wobbling along in convoy..
You pay road tax based upon the amount of carbon/pollution you put out. At the same rate bicycles do. If your vehicle is low emission, your tax is lower. You decide how much you pay by your choice of vehicle.

Chaos for locals trying to work, ( yes some people do work on Sundays ) and even if some don’t work, why should they have to move where they park or even not be able go out for a walk just for a few lycra clad louts to create mayhem. “Oh it’s good for the island”, no it isn’t they will bring there own staff and supplies, “oh it’s on the telly”, so who the hell will watch it anyway, I believe it’s on ITV4 and the viewing figures are never high on ITV4 for anything anyway.
It’s also going out worldwide on Eurosport to be watched by millions of potential visitors
Rubbish they bring a bottle of water ride around for the day slow all the traffic by riding two and three abreast, different if your using your bike to get to work, we need visitors to stay for a few days and spend money keeping people employed.

Good for the Island people? so inconvenience for many, parking charges for others. If it’s going to bring money to the Island will that mean my council tax goes down? No it will go up to pay for road signs, road closures,media, letters and brown envelope pay offs. I’m ok for race but council seems to over complicate things, like said before the round the Island cycle race with hundreds and hundreds of cyclist’s don’t get road’s closed etc. Still not seen any posts of who’s paying?.
Do the council have enough tow trucks to move all the vehicles that cannot park anywhere else. Clamp your own cars people, or sit in your own car and lock the doors. If your in your car they can’t tow it away, Disrupt the disruptors.
They can call the police (who will have an increased presence during the even, because idiots like you are a thing) who will smash in the windows, drag you out, and arrest you.
Then they will tow your car away.
Also, if any Tour cyclists are seriously injured or killed because of your actions, you can expect jail time, which would, at least, relieve us of having to see the drivel you continuously post.

Worked on a few events (running, rather than cycling) and you always get a few self-entitled idiots who protest about parking restrictions by not moving their cars.
If the driver was present they are given one chance to remove it, or its impounded. Just craned onto the back of the truck and taken away (so clamps won’t help). If they aren’t about it’s craned away anyway.
I must admit I don’t know of anyone occurrence when someone was idiotic enough to try what Digby is suggesting, but the police do have the power to do what I suggested. There was one occasion when someone tried to block a race with their car during the actual race. On that occasion, however, it was the spectators who dragged them out and pushed the car out of the way.
All moot, anyway. Digby will live up to the 3rd part of his name. All mouth and no trousers, that one.
Assuming it was the council who have posted out 70,000+ timetable leaflets to residents homes, what surety do we have, the council tax payers, have that there will be a return on the “investment”?

I haven’t had a letter?- who is paying for them at cost around £140,000 ? (Postage,letter and envelope)
I heard that the cost to the ratepayers of putting on the race is going to be in excess of Half a million pounds anyone else any idea.

You’re road closures are nothing compared to where I live in Pembrokeshire as the roads are closed for a period of 2days for the iron man challenge which attracts thousands of people every year, your event is just a one off and so enjoy it!
I have had the answer to my own question, it is to allow safety services should they need access to the hospital or to get to the ferry.
I’m looking foward to the entertainment of all the accidents:)

No, motorists do not pay to be on the roads. Everybody pays for the roads whether they own a car or not, you entitled prat.
So basically someone made a cock up of signs,or legally. They could easily of just said no stopping after 18-00 day before until after race passes on Sunday 11th. It’s been so confusing for some and especially those that we want here to spend money – tourists. Expect alot will change their plans of coming because all roads are closed. As for placement of signs been out today and alot are still blocking be be view of on coming traffic – so much for road safety.

Who is funding the road closures and signage for the race? As I recall Island Roads charged extortionate fees for such closures for jubilee street parties.
