A number of changes are being made to the traffic and pedestrian arrangements on Ryde Esplanade ahead of the busy Bank Holiday weekend, which will see thousands descend on the seafront for the annual Scooter Rally.
Traffic arrangements in the area, which is currently at the heart of a major, year-long highway transformation programme, are being adjusted to help ease traffic and travel for those heading to Ryde.
The changes, which will also benefit local residents and businesses, include:
- St Thomas’ Street, which has been 1-way for southbound traffic in the last few months, will revert to 2-way traffic to ease travel in the area.
- A temporary, pedestrian walkway will be established alongside the work site near the bus station to enable people to reach Western Gardens more easily.
- The temporary walkway will be removed after the weekend to allow work to recommence but will be reinstated ahead of the Tour of Britain cycle race on Sunday 11th September. St Thomas’ Street will however continue to be 2-way for the duration of the project.
Work on the footpath outside the front of LA Bowl is also nearing completion and all fencing and other work materials will be removed from this area of the site on Friday to open up the area once more.
New traffic islands further along the Esplanade opposite Ryde Castle, have also been completed and have already been helping those crossing this busy section of road.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for transport said:
“Our contractors at Island Roads have been working hard to ensure that these changes could be brought in before the bank holiday weekend when so many residents and visitors will be wanting to enjoy the Scooter Rally and other events taking place in Ryde.”
The £10million scheme is due to be completed by the end of March 2023.

The only thing the isle of wight is good at is piss poor management.
why aren’t traffic wardens ticketing all the scooters blocking the pavement by the marine pub and since when did the esplanade Hotel have a scooter park on the pavement ,those scooters are blocking the pedestrian access, forcing people onto the road
Annoying rubbish ridden by equally annoying rubbish, park them out on ryde sands at low water.

Hi it’s ok about the sea front wot about the traffic on John steet an west street took me ten minutes from Newport street bloody joke on bank holiday
It will all be finished in March next year & will look a lot better, let’s face it the bus station was in dire need of a face lift.
