Crowds gathered on the streets of Ryde for the penultimate carnival of the season yesterday evening (Thursday).
Having travelled around the Isle of Wight over the Summer, carnival floats once again descended on Ryde for the latest procession of what is one of England’s oldest carnivals.
The weather stayed warm and dry for those taking part and the spectators who lined the route from the Esplanade, up Dover Street and Park Road to the town, as well as down Union Street and along the Esplanade.
This year, the 40-minute-long carnival was live streamed to YouTube and a special viewing platform was installed outside Dover Park Primary School for those with disabilities.
At just 40 minutes long, this year’s carnival was shorter than in previous years – which isn’t all that surprising given the carnival hasn’t run since 2019 due to the pandemic. A notable absence was that of any local schools and the tradition of having the town’s fire appliance leading the way.
The last carnival of the 2022 season will be held in Ryde on Saturday when the illuminated procession moves off at 20:30.
