Carisbrooke College’s 2023 school trip to Vietnam has been shortlisted for a national award! It is 1 of just 4 finalists in the ‘My Best School Trip’ category in the annual School Travel Awards.
The trip, organised by Carisbrooke College Mandarin Teacher, Joe Briscoe, took 30 students from Carisbrooke College, Medina College and The Island VI Form to Vietnam for a 10-day adventure, travelling from the north to the south of the country.
Some of the highlights included visiting the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, exploring the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the 17th Parallel, journeying up the Mekong river while avoiding snakes and giant spiders and spending a night with a local family deep in the rainforest.
While the adventurous aspects of the trip were fun, there was a very serious point behind it.
Joe Briscoe said:
“Interacting with the people of Vietnam and talking to them about their experiences during the war was a real eye-opener and, as students walked around the War Remnants Museum in Saigon, you could see the shocking reality of the war hit home to
them.”
The trip truly brought history lessons to life and enabled these students to make memories to last them a lifetime.
A Carisbrooke College spokesperson has said:
“Well done and thank you to Mr Briscoe (Teacher at Carisbrooke College) who organised the trip. It provided students with the most amazing opportunity to experience a completely different country first-hand and foster cultural awareness, empathy, and a greater global perspective.”
The awards ceremony will take place on 29 November 2024 in London. Not only will the winner get the trophy and acclaim, but a cool £2,000 to spend on a future educational visit.
