A caravan that caused months of traffic delays on a busy road connecting Newport and Wootton has been moved to a car park, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.
Over the weekend, the ‘troublesome’ caravan was moved from its Whiterails Road spot to Gravel Pit Lane, off Briddlesford Road after months of back and forth between the council, the caravan owner and the public.
Within a day or so, pictures surfaced on social media showing the Eriba Touring GT resting in a hedge having rolled from the other side of the road.
The caravan had been in situ on Whiterails Road since December 2025 when traffic lights were erected around it amid safety fears for both road users and the caravan’s occupant – as first reported by Island Echo.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“The caravan recently parked in Whiterails Road, is no longer on the public highway and has been removed to a quiet area in a council car park. The area has also been cleared of any debris.
“We have contacted the owner to explain we are acting within our powers of Sections 143 and 149 under of the Highways Act, and happy to work with them regarding the future of the caravan.
It remains unclear why the caravan was moved from one public road to another prior to its move to a car park.
Island Echo understands that the caravan now resides in Cowes.

So what about the caravan(s) parked up outside Chale in a layby!!
They ok to stay then?. If so, I could save a fortune in storage fees and just use the road.
I agree the dumped caravans in the lay-by just outside Chale are an eyesore just take them and crush them?? The owners CBA to accept responsibility for them so crush them? Win win
About time it was scrapped i see out out chale commom 2 caravans dumped by side of road..
Should have been moved straight to Lynbottom, job done!
Well said.
I thought fly tipping was illegal, obviously NOT!
Take it to the crusher
Crush the caravan prob cheaper than keep having it moved from place to place? The owners CBA to take responsibility of it so get on with it it’s an eyesore.
Crush them all
