A touring caravan park on the outskirts of Newport could become static lodges in a bid to try and keep up with the current market.
In an application submitted to the Isle of Wight Council, Mr S. Smith is asking for the modernisation of Riverside Paddock, on Dodnor Lane, Newport.
The site sits next to the cycle track from Newport to Cowes and near to the now-closed Medina Valley Centre.
It is hoped to replace the caravan pitches and tenting field with 22x 2-bed tourism lodges, with car parking spaces and landscaping.
A bicycle stand would also be installed at every lodge to encourage cycling, especially with the cycle track on the edge of the paddock.
Planning agent for the site, BCM, said the objective of the application was to create an attractive all-year round holiday facility, with modern lodges that appealed to the current market.
In planning documents, it is said the campsite had continually sought to improve its tourism offer and now with safety regulations, due to the coronavirus pandemic, self-contained units would allow the site to remain viable.
Agents say it would require investment but would provide local employment opportunities with higher returns in the long run.
Comments on the application, 20/01287/FUL, can be made until 30th October on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning portal.
