UPDATED: A car driver has had a lucky escape after ploughing through a traffic light, taking out a garden wall and ending up in the front garden of a property in Newport this morning (Thursday).

The Seat Ibiza is thought to have been travelling south on Staplers Road before the driver lost control, leaving lengthy skidmarks on the carriageway.

Eye witnesses have told Island Echo that the car narrowly missed colliding with a taxi.

Police and Ambulance crews were called to the incident at the top of Snooks Hill at around midnight. They remain on scene

Although the recently sold house appears to be unscathed, apart from a damaged wall, a traffic light column has been completely wiped out by the vehicle.

Thankfully, no one is thought to have been seriously injured in the incident.

The road remains open under police direction. Recovery has been arranged.

Island Echo is anticipating some travel delays in the area, especially during rush hour.

UPDATE @ 03:00 – Island Roads engineers have been to assess the damage and have tweeted to warn drivers that the traffic light on the Cowes bound lane of Snooks Hill is not functioning.

There has been no mention of any installation of temporary traffic lights, meaning delays should be kept to a minimum.
