UPDATED: The driver of a small hatchback car has been involved in a single vehicle road traffic collision in Sandown this morning (Sunday), prompting a response from fire, police and ambulance crews.
Emergency services were called to Avenue Slipway at the junction with the roundabout at the bottom of the High Street at around 03:45 after a Ford Fiesta collided with a lamp post.
Witnesses have described to Island Echo how the driver, who was travelling away from the seafront, appeared to be wet and sandy as if he had been in the sea.
A single fire crew from Sandown have stabilised the vehicle and assisted the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service with freeing the casualty, who is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
The man’s injuries are not thought to be serious.
Recovery of the car has been arranged.
UPDATE @ 05:50 – The car has been recovered by Bartletts Service Station.
The road has fully reopened and emergency services have left the scene.
