A car dangling over a wall has resulted in Police closing the road down onto Shanklin seafront this afternoon (Saturday).
A BMW 1-series is dangerously close to falling onto the carriageway on Hope Hill, posing a risk to passing motorists and pedestrians.
The incident occurred at just before 13:30.
Police and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are on scene, with the only road to the Esplanade currently closed in both directions.
Firefighters from Shanklin are working to make safe the vehicle, with a cordon in place in the interests of public safety.
Motorists already enjoying a sunny Saturday afternoon on the seafront have become trapped, until the situation is deemed safe enough to reopen the road.
This is not the first time an incident of this nature has occurred – with an identical incident responded to by emergency services in recent years.
UPDATE @ 14:30 – Cordons have been lifted and Hope Hill has reopened to traffic in both directions.

Wouldnt happen if it was a 20mph limit …. just thought I’d get that in first 🙂
Safety is imperative. 20mph is plenty.
The island is a Dinosaur when it comes to Road safety.
You’re the dinosaur
20 is plenty, it is coming
It’s exciting to slow NUMPTIES down!
Thanks Dave that wanker be here soon 20 and cctv..
Enough about yourself.
Lol
You know islandwide 20mph is plenty and
islandwide CCTV makes sense.
Slower speeds does not burn so much fuel,
there is a fuel shortage coming.
EVs are King
He’s posted 7 times on this article alone, spouting his usual inane garbage about 20 and CCTV. I’m sure accidents get him all excited for some reason, either that or he just delights in the misfortunes of others.
If Numpties stopped speeding woildn’t the
Island be a wonderful safe place.
So what speed exactly do you think the car was doing down that steep, bendy hill?
Too fast, majority of numpties driving down
Hope Road cannot stay on their side of the road.
More bad driving on the Iow
Yet another example of the standard of driving on the island.
Whoever the driver of this car is should be banned from driving.
When you don’t know the circumstances? Failed handrake cable, faulty clutch – could any one of many reasons.
Should park with steering turned on full lock.
Flipping heck what’s wrong with the police
Just lash a rope on the BMW and pull it back
It’s not rocket science and not dangerous
Health and safety my arse
Just get on with it.
Don’t be a Numpty all your life, say a family
were walking along with children at the time.
My guess is an elderly driver in an automatic. Correct me if I’m wrong but what a bloody Sausage
Safety barriers need to be fitted around this complex
now we know such incidents could KILL innocent persons walking
along the pavement.
Quite right.
How?? Need to take a driving test I think?
UNBELIEVABLE
A ban for life, could have killed many persons
especially during the NOW holiday season
You cannot make this sh*t up!
I have never forgotten when a professor sadly
dying along Shanklin seafront due to BAD driving.
THESE FLATS NEED TO ERECT IRON / STEEL FENCING
WHAT IS STOPPING SUCH DISASTERS HAPPENING AGAIN!
And a child was killed at Yaverland by a car in similar circumstances, leading to the wall, etc that’s there now. Heartbreaking.
I remember that sad accident. I think it
wasn’t long after the accident in Shanklin.
What I cannot believe is that the Council put
in safety measures at Sandown, but done nothing
along Shanklin eplanade and such a similar tragedy
could happen again.
Maybe the Council does care about people
walking along Shanklin Esplanade or sunbathing on
Shanklin beach.
IT IS A TICKING TIME BOMB WAITING TO HAPPEN
ESPECIALLY THE WAY BOY RACERS SPEED ALONG THE
ESPLANADE
THE SPEED HUMPS ALONG THE ESPLANADE IN SHANKLIN
DOESN’T STOP SPEEDING, THEY ARE TOO SPACED OUT.
THEY NEED MORE HUMPS CLOSER TOGETHER.
Road safety on the island leaves little to the imagination.
IW COUNCIL ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT PEOPLE
GOING A FEW MINUTES OVER THEIR PARKING TIME!
You can’t park there, pal
Can’t park there mate!
Wonder how many parking tickets they got lol.
