carinhedgestroudwoodroad3UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Police and paramedics are attending a road traffic incident on Stroudwood Road on the outskirts of Ryde this afternoon (Saturday).

A Citroen C4 Picasso has left the carriageway and come to rest in a hedge between Upton and Havenstreet. The incident, which has involved just 1 vehicle, occurred at just before 15:30.

2 fire appliances from Ryde and Newport are on scene and crews are working to extricate the male driver from the car. It is thought he blacked out at the wheel.

Thankfully, 2 young children in the vehicle at the time of the incident have escaped any injury and are now being cared for by family members.

Stroudwood Road has been closed in both directions.

UPDATE @ 16:20 – The driver – who is understood to have had a medical episode – has been safely extricated from the vehicle and is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. He is to be conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.

Stroudwood Road remains closed between Rowlands Lane and Upton Cross whilst crews make up and recovery of the vehicle is arranged.

UPDATE @ 16:50 – The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have now stood down from the incident.

Police remain on scene whilst the car is recovered by Bartletts Service Station.

The road is expected to reopen within the hour.

UPDATE @ 18:00 – Stroudwood Road has now reopened in both directions.
