The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has been called to car that is ablaze on the outskirts of Arreton this evening (Friday).
Fire control has mobilised appliances from Newport and Shanklin to the incident on St George’s Down, overlooking Arreton, Merstone and Blackwater.
The assistance of the 4×4 Land Rover from Ryde has also been called upon with all 3 resources in attendance.
2 members of the public called the fire in after spotting the flames and smoke from a distance. They used a green lane and their Land Rover Defender to access the scene of the fire, discovering a car had been set alight.
Access to the remote location has proven difficult for the fire crews who have only just got water on the fire in the past 10 minutes.
The make/model of the vehicle is unclear, but it appears to be a modified saloon.
The burnt out shells of 2 other vehicles involved in previous fires can be seen at the top of St George’s Down.
UPDATE @ 22:30 – The fire has been extinguished using an extended hose reel.
Firefighters had concerns about the surrounding countryside but luckily the fire was contained by a natural bowl in the land.
Crews are now leaving the scene.
Police have been notified of the incident due to its suspicious nature.
Little shits
Why aren’t the burnt out shells removed?
As they are no problem to other road users Technically they are still the responsibility of the owners
They removed loads years ago..
What is a green lane
grass
Not surprised you don’t know what a green lane is, after all, with all the building, there won’t be any grass on the island at all soon.
A green lane is correctly called a Byway, they are signposted BBxx, like footpaths and bridleways.
They are legally open to all traffic. BOAT -Byway Open to All Traffic.
They are some of the oldest routes, pre-dating motor vehicles and need to be preserved.
No tarmac, plenty of ridges and holes though. Not recommended, however, for any softie cars.
They are supposed to be kept open as part of our heritage, but the council close them for half of each year.
That has got insurance job written all over it
Police will dou sod all……..
Modified cars should be banned they are too noisy !
You do realise a camper van is a modified vehicle don’t you?
My modified car is the same volume it was when it was standard. It didn’t get louder because I put a set of alloys on it idiot
Electric cars should be banned they’re too quiet
Disgusting to leave burnt cars like this. IF it is the owners responsibility then their insurance should pay to have the thing removed. Such a shame the drivers and no doubt passengers were not inside.
If so, we would all have to pretend to be ‘sad’ as their chav mates left flowers and tins of beer at the scene.
See them for what they are.
These people need to found, and punished. the ground is tinder dry. again we have been fortunate that it has been extinguished and prevented from spreading. The morons walk amongst us.
Must have come from the pennyfeathers estate. i know it’s not been built but it gets the blame for everything so i thought if you can’t beat them join them.
Hahaha! Brilliant Stu, Its that pesky overspill from Bradford causing all the trouble. Even though they are not here yet.. lol…
Smirk, watch and learn. Lol
Don’t forget the fixed link
Yep, that’s where they take em.
