82mph winds were recorded at The Needles yesterday (Tuesday) as strong winds from Storm Francis battered the Isle of Wight.
The National Coastwatch station at the most westerly point of the Island saw wind speeds hit 82.85mph – Storm 11 – at 18:21.
Hovertravel services were suspended throughout the day and Southern Vectis decided not to serve the Needles Battery. Red Funnel took the decision to suspend their Red Jet service yesterday evening too.
On the roads, a fallen tree at Havenstreet led to some minor disruption for a time.
In Seaview, the community rallied together to say the Sea View Yacht Club’s dinghies. Whilst most were saved, sadly a number capsized and were left with broken masts.
IW Met Service had issued a yellow weather warning for both strong winds and heavy rain, which the forecast proving to be spot on.
Today is going to be a mostly sunny day with a high of around 21c. During this afternoon we may see the odd shower developing but these will be very localised.
I think there was an 85 mph gust of wind in our house. Must stop the wife eating curry.
