After 9 weeks of significant travel disruption, Briddlesford Road near Wootton is set to finally re-open later this week following the completion of gas works by SGN.
The busy route between Wootton and Arreton was suddenly closed without explanation towards the start of the year. Motorists have been forced to divert towards Newport since, with frustrations growing towards the end of February as little work seemed to be taking place.
Over the past few days, specialist contractors have been drafted in by SGN to replace gas pipes in the area. This is despite a £1.1million scheme to replace the gas main in the area just 12 months ago. It has now been confirmed that the protracted works have finally been completed and efforts are underway to reinstate the carriageway. This comes after several extensions to the road closure, which saw Island Roads ‘encouraging’ SGN to complete the work as soon as possible. It’s currently planned that the road will be re-opened by the end of Wednesday.
