EXCLUSIVE: Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts were called to St Helen’s this morning (Thursday) after being alerted to the discovery of a possible explosive.
Police were called to Laundry Lane by a member of the public after they discovered an unknown object in amongst a collection of items, which had been in the family for some time.
Officers alerted the Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth, who arrived on the Island shortly before 11:00.
After examining the discovery experts deemed it to be safe.
It is believed the solid projectile, used to penetrate like a bullet, could be a 57mm naval projectile from World War II.
The shell was removed by the Royal Navy, who have since returned to Portsmouth.
