The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team have been called to Woodside Bay near Wootton this evening (Saturday) following the discovery of a piece of suspected ordnance.
A member of the public reported the find to HM Coastguard shortly before 15:45, resulting in the mobilisation of Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team.
A cordon has been established around the metal-looking object by Coastguard Rescue Officers.
Bomb disposal experts, who have been on the Island today for another incident in the West Wight, have been requested to attend the scene to conduct an examination of the potentially explosive device.
It is unknown at this stage if the object will be blown up by means of a controlled explosion.
Woodside Bay remains open to the public save for a small section of the beach which has been closed.
UPDATE @ 18:28 – Following an on-scene inspection it has been determined that the object is not an explosive.
The object has been removed to prevent further call outs.
HM Coastguard and the Royal Navy have now stood down from the incident.
