Police have confirmed that a body found floating in the sea off The Needles is that of a man in his 60s.
It was just before 18:00 yesterday evening (Thursday) that the shocking find was reported to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
Due to the location of the discovery – to the west of the Isle of Wight’s most iconic landmark – HM Coastguard coordinated the launch of Yarmouth RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat to facilitate the recovery of the deceased individual.
The body was soon hauled onboard and taken back to Yarmouth Harbour, where a cordon was erected as lifeboat crew members transferred the body ashore.
Police were at the quayside waiting, alongside Coastguard Rescue Officers from Needles Coastguard Rescue Team.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say the individual is believed to be a 63-year-old man from Bournemouth.
His next of kin have been informed of the death. The Coroner has also been notified.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Another life lost, so very sad, another family lost a loved one. Thinking of the family
Sad news, maybe use the term “taken aboard” as “hauled aboard” sounds disrespectful.
Great journalism..
Sad news at any time.
Be aware that the coroner is probably operating a five year diary.
