The body of a 44-year-old man has been recovered from the base of a cliff near Atherfield, Police have confirmed.
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services responded to Whale Chine off Military Road at around 10:30 this morning.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene alongside the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. However, it soon became apparent nothing could be done to save the person’s life and the helicopters were stood down.
Coastguard Rescue Officers from Ventnor and The Needles have now recovered the body by means of a technical rescue, lowering 4 cliff technicians around 100ft down into the chine.
Police had sealed off footpaths in the area but restrictions have now been lifted with the incident concluded.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called at 10.19 today (September 18) to a report of the body of a 44-year-old man having been found near Blythe Shute, Chale.
“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file shall be prepared for the coroner.”

Very sad
Very very sad. l hope his angels caught him.
I saw the poor guy at the bottom of the chine, as I was about to walk down there this morning, but a crowd were at the top of the steps down and police were just arriving so went back to the car.
Hard to know if he fell over the edge or perhaps had heart attack as it is incredibly steep climb and cliff falls happen often there.
Hope the family stay strong whatever the reason, feel so sorry as a beautiful place for something so tragic to happen.
Condolences to the gentleman’s family and friends at this difficult time.
