A large scale rescue operation is underway at Whale Chine off Military Road this morning (Friday) involving 2 helicopters and 2 Coastguard Rescue Teams.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed on the cliff top to assist the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service with the ongoing incident.
Coastguard Rescue Officers from Ventnor and The Needles have set up a cliff rescue tripod and have lowered a technician over the edge and into the chine.
Coastguard Rescue helicopter 175 is also in attendance.
Police have cordoned off footpaths in the area whilst the incident is ongoing.
The alarm was raised sometime before 10:30.
UPDATE @ 12:05 – The incident is still ongoing at this time, although both helicopters have now stood down.
UPDATE @ 14:00 – The body of a 44-year-old man has been recovered.

Before you jump down people’s throats the story had been updated several times and the sad news at the end probably wasn’t there earlier.
Had you noticed the time of the comment you would’ve noticed it was posted a bit before that update.
