Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has been made a patron of the Brighstone Reading Rooms & Social Club – a club built by his ancestors over 100 years ago. The Reading Room was built in 1905 by Mr Seely’s great-great grandfather, Sir Charles Seely, to encourage literacy and was gifted to the community in 1928 by Sir Hugh Seely as a Reading and Coffee Room. It later became the base for the Brighstone Social Club, which provides facilities for snooker, petanque and social events. Mr Seely accepted the role of patron at the club’s AGM on Friday 5 April. Bob said:
“It was a privilege to be asked to be patron of the Brighstone Reading Rooms and Social Club to help futureproof the club that my ancestors built over 100 years ago. “I am thrilled that people are still using it today and that membership figures are rising. The snooker and billiards tables are amongst the best on the Island and the drinks are good value too.”
The club has increased its membership from 90 to around 160 members over the past year. Club Chairman, Graham Ockendon commented:
“I am delighted that Bob has agreed to be the patron of the Brighstone Reading Room and Social Club. “It seems fitting that the patron should be a member of the Seely family since the club building was built at Sir Charles Seely’s request over 100 years ago. “Bob is already helping us to raise the profile of the club so that we can continue to grow our membership and carry out improvement works.”
Anyone wishing to join the club can download a membership form here www.brighstonesocialclub.co.uk and email it to [email protected]

Well done Bob. Nice to know you have the support of the silent majority. How lovely that your ancestors have been here for many years helping Islanders and caring for the Island. Too many here now who don’t and never will fit in, so expect whinging from those who wrongly think enriching is the answer.
These fools know not what they are doing
Awww look t the gullible there with the tory snake, deluded people.
Is there nothing this fool won’t do to get noticed? And does the Reading Room really expect to gain kudos from association with prize dimwit?
I have been to the stores at Brighstone and the have some amazing sausages but only full size not half size! Bob you are still a nob and hopefully we can vote out this useless government and you !!!! If a man can’t take a full sausage you need to move on down the bus!!! Even the greens can eat a whole veggie sausage!!!
Rogues Gallery, Bob definitely one
Anything for a photo op .. eh Pop Up Bob ..
Robert Seely is incontrovertibly literate, thank goodness. But I still ain’t gonna vote for him and his party.
Looks like rogue’s gallery. This could be the last time all the conservative supporters on the island are together in one room.
West Wight warm up. Get your pencils sharpened. Maybe next he’ll be giving pencils away with his name on.
10 blue tories standing in the room, and if 1 blue tory should accidentally fall, there’d be no blue tories, cos this one will fall.
Oh, is this an election year? He seems to be doing so much for the island now and for all those years he done nothing.
Russia is waging war on Europe and Bob has his head in the sand joining reading clubs. Chamberlain would be proud of his appeasement of Russia. We need to go to war, we need to deal with Russia today! If not Russia will bring the war to us in a few years and it’ll be to late.
Least by then if London is nuked, few real British will die
Makes a change from him queue jumping in Brighstone stores. Everything he touches turns to sh*t.
