Police are in attendance on the main road between Newport and Cowes where a BMW has crashed through a garden wall and head-on into a lamppost this afternoon (Monday).
The incident, which occurred at around 15:00, has taken place to the north of the junction with Stag Lane.
It is unclear as to the exact circumstances which have led to the single vehicle collision, but it is thought the driver lost control, veered across the road and into a wall at the entrance to 2 driveways.
The black 1-series BMW then continued into a lamp post.
Traffic is heavy travelling into Cowes, with traffic moving but backing up towards St Mary’s Hospital.
Staff from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service’s Patient Transport Service are tending to those involved.
Island Roads is already on scene assessing the damage to the street furniture.
UPDATE – The vehicle has been recovered by Bartletts Service Station and the scene cleared.

Looks like another case of speeding.
Time for speed Camera’s islandwide and it’s about
time IW Council placed Speed Humps along many island
roads to make vehicles go slower.
You prat
The truth always hurts.
How can one photo with no mention in the narrative about speed “look like another case of speeding”. More like another case of trial by social media. The prudent thing to do would be to wait until some facts emerge. “It is so wicked to breathe any breath of scandal until one has one’s facts”
The cause of the incident may be mechanical or driver error. If the latter there will have been a reason for the error. Rather than speculate, I’d rather dwell on who will pay for the accident/incident. We’re told the damaged ‘street furniture ‘ will be replaced, but who will foot the bill? The insurers or the Council taxpayer? Either way it will be we who end up paying. As I asked yesterday, what happened to the offences of careless driving? Or was this yet another ‘no fault’event?
“I’d rather dwell on who will pay for the accident/incident”
to perhaps answer that, 40+ years ago, when I slid off the road (in the snow) & collided with a lamp post,.. I (or my insurance) had to pay for it…

At least you are not taking the Lords name in vain today.
Bless you.
Amen
Agreed the fact it could have been a medical incident seems to have bypassed others one braine celled attitude.
If a vehicle was driving sensibly how the fcuk
would it end up looking like it was blitzed!
Specsavers are doing great deals at the moment
even numpty’s can participate.
Well, I doubt the lamp post was travelling at any speed so I recon it was the BMW moving “at speed”, and as it is facing the wrong way on that side of the road, there are a few possibilities which could be considered, medical incident, drugs/drink, speed, looking at a phone screen.
Going too fast where we for your limited driving experience..oh well at least off the road car totaled and you insurance going right up ..oh and points on licence ..if you have one.
