Islanders are being warned that some bin/sack collections may be temporarily suspended today (Tuesday) due to the extreme heat.
This action is said to be for the safety of Amey’s waste operators on what is the hottest day ever in the UK.
Areas where both residents’ waste and recycling collections could be affected include Ryde, Binstead, Niton, Brighstone and Freshwater.
Crews have been collecting as usual but due to the extreme temperatures and risk of heatstroke, they are being given extra water and other measures to deal with the heat throughout the day.
Residents are being advised that if their bin/sack is not collected today:
- Leave the bin/sack out and it will be collected as priority tomorrow (Wednesday 20th July).
- If your waste or recycling has not been collected by 12 noon Wednesday, report this to the council online at iwight.com/waste
- If your waste or recycling collection is usually Wednesday, put your bin/sacks out as usual at the kerbside.
Natasha Dix, the council’s strategic manager for the environment, said:
“We understand this might cause frustration for residents and ask that you bear with us as me make sure collection crews are operating safely in this heat.
“We will continue to monitor the temperatures and make residents aware of any further issues.”

We have a bit of snow and everything slides into chaos.

For goodness sake, it’s only a couple of days of hot weather. People go to Spain, Greece etc, etc and they survive!

I was out a very short while ago and witnessed a refuse crew wearing all their protective and high viz gear and genuinely thought do they really need to be out today. My rubbish is due to be collected today but the world won’t stop spinning if its collected tomorrow instead. Common sense should surely say, go home lads, clean up and cool yourselves down and thanks for today’s efforts

At last a sensible decision by management these guys work hard on cool days god knows what it has been like in the last two days.Unfortunately they cannot do that job in shorts and T shirts, and have to wear high vis jackets and trousers .God only knows how they have coped so far.god bless them for their sterling efforts.
A repeat from the storm in February, management are not exactly bright when they know what the weather is going to do, but act at the very last minute. Managers are paid big wages to be proactive, not reactive

To give these folks one day respite from the heat is not going to make the world come to a halt, they do a job that very few of us really appreciate, they have to wear high viz trousers and jackets which are nylon based which only increases fluid loss, walking anywhere in the last two days would cause any normal person to sweat, add in heavy manual work and wearing a sweat suit, well lets just say, would you wont to do it.
I also note workers with plastic helmets on. If anything is going to heat your head up it is sticking a plastic bowl on it.
The trouble is this has become the norm along with all the other ppe paraphernalia. I needed steel toe capped boots and a hi viz just to get out of a truck last week. Thankfully the plastic p pot was not required as the only thing above us was the sky and pigeons!
