Waste collections in Newport, Gunville and Carisbrooke have been temporarily suspended today (Friday) as temperatures exceed 30c.
The suspension means some waste or recycling may not be collected today that would usually take place on Friday.
This action is for the safety of Amey collection crews, due to the heatwave.
A full list of Roads in Newport, Gunville and Carisbrooke where residents’ collections are affected can be found below.
Assisted collections are not be affected.
The Isle of Wight Council and Amey are advising residents that if your bin/sack is not collected today:
- Leave the bin/sack out and it will be collected as priority tomorrow (Saturday 13th August)
- If your waste or recycling has not been collected by 12 noon on Saturday 13th August, report the matter to the council online at www.iwight.com/waste

So if the bin men are aloud to suspend the rubbish collection how about the manufacturers that work in factory buildings suffer from the heat as well but we are not aloud to suspend our work

You could complain to your employers if your not happy with your working conditions,and there is a big difference between being in direct sunlight and just a hot inside working environment.

Yes these guy get fresh air working out side us factory worker don’t get much fresh air in a factory altho the door’s are open but not much fresh air comes through so its OK for them to suspend there bin collection if all factory worker’s suspend there work there wouldn’t be any production work going on and customers won’t get there product’s
“These guys” do hard manual labour in direct sunlight in full PPE.
As for “fresh air”?
Guessing you haven’t ever been too close to a bin lorry when it’s working. Bad enough in cool weather but handling people’s food waste that has been festering for a week in the heat is at a whole new level.
If you think you have it so tough, why don’t you jack in your factory job and get yourself some “fresh air” emptying people’s filth into a lorry.

Your work conditions cannot be much fun,while this is no maximum temperature noted for not having to work the law is very clear under health and safety at work which states that the temperature in the workplace must be at a comfortable level and there must be clean and fresh air available, your employer must make reasonable provisions for such temperature excesses, such as extra fluid breaks and regular down time, the cost to them if the health and safety executive get on their case will be far highe than providing some portable air con units.
Jeez Louise, it’ll be collected tomorrow,give the guys a break, it’s a dirty stinking job and I for one think they do a great job for very little money.
Fair points raised here BUT the problem is with food waste not being collected with fruit and flies being left to change to the waste becoming a health risk. Maybe the refuse company needs to spray the empty bins before returning them and allow the fly deposits to increase?
What about all the other workers still working in this heat?
Yes, everyone is hot working in this weather, but they run up and down the hot roads in heavy, thick high vis clothing carrying heavy loads for hours in the heat and sun.
Unlike the firemen who I’ve not heard whinge once.
Talking to guys working alone ryde seafront today, and was amazed they have to wear long trousers, shirts. Gloves, glasses and, believe it or not a hard plastic hat. In this weather. Shame on their bosses.
Ah yes, the inevitable ppi. Wearing a piss pot on your head all day is bad enough when cold but in searing heat? What is ever likely to fall on your head out on the street apart from a bird turd? Yet I see all and sundry, get out their vans/trucks/cars and on goes the piss pot. Then the goggles, then the ear defenders….by the time you have it all on, you could have done the job they arrive to do!
But we must obey Elf Nd Safe T mustn’t we? In my life time in the building industry the only serious accident I saw was when a guy took a scaffold away from a lift shaft. People are not allowed to think for themselves these days, it is all nanny state.

This is unbelievable what kind of society do we now live in. Are the fireman going to stop work if it get’s to hot, contractors working on the roads through the heat, builders, roofers or
garden centre workers wotking in greenhouses in temperatures approaching 35 degrees.
I hope they are not being paid.
Try working in a greenhouse all-day then you will know what hot is.
I’ve got every sympathy and respect for our bin men – they’re really friendly guys who I get on with, but I’ve said this before, there’s no need to rush around in the heat. You don’t HAVE to finish by lunchtime or early afternoon. Take a break every so often, stop and drink some water. Who cares if it takes an extra hour or two to collect the rubbish on a particular route? There’s no rush to get finished, it’s not a race, take your time.
I use to work on the bins years ago on the mainland, we weren’t allowed to leave the depot until 6am and all trucks had to be off the road by 2pm. I know it sounds stupid but people complained if we were too early and if the trucks were still out in the afternoon! Go figure!

WORK AT NIGHT. NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, IS IT? Uncollected rubbish equals smell, flies, disease and, oh yes, another excuse not to work.
Weird how other countries manage to carry on working.
If I refused to work or my employers refused to open for business then, I’d be homeless the business would go bankrupt. LIFE goes on regardless of the weather. Imagine if we adopted this ‘nanny state’ attitude during the Blitz, we’d probably be all speaking German (or worse) Russian!
Would it be possible for the bin personnel to work say 6am until 12 or 5am to 11 in these extreme circumstances?
Or one shift in the morning and another in the evening like they do in Spain?
How can a council be so out of touch with public. This woke mentality is pathetic to say the least. What happens if we get heavy rain, are rubbish collections going to be suspended because their hair will go curly.
in the heatwave of the 70s they had to keep working and pick the bins up from your garden now there on wheels next to the road and don’t have to lift them up
