Isle of Wight singer-songwriter Ben Stubbs is to release his debut album Light of my Life on Friday (19th May).
Ben Stubbs attended Medina High School and studied Performing Arts to learn guitar. His curiosity lead him to Poitiers, France in 2011, spending a short stint performing live in bars and restaurants.
It was during this time that he wrote the majority of his first EP Songs From Cherrytrees, which would contain his very first single release Up in the Clouds (2013) and second track Time to Go (2013).
2014 saw him release the Bandcamp acoustic project Sea View Sessions. 1 year later, his gigging career took him to Thailand, where he landed a job as a regular performer, but this would come to an end following the death of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej and a prohibition of live performances as a result of the country’s mourning.
Stubbs consequently moved back to his hometown and was welcomed as a full time professional gigging musician.
Light of My Life is bursting with warmth and exuberance. Since his return to song writing in 2019, Ben has been faithfully refining this 10 track anthology of reflections on life:
Ben has said:
“There are several different themes but generally it talks about escaping, missing places I love, coming to terms with my past, getting older and learning to be ok with myself and life”.
From the opening track, with the sentiment “Stop the world, I’m getting off”, it’s evident that we are listening to a highly lyrical and singular talent.
From here, we hear breezy Country flavoured tracks like Live and Let Live, stripped back songs dedicated to his partner, including title track Light of My Life, and Bluesy cinematic pieces like Raised By Man.
This project has already built an impressive local buzz and can even be credited to some of his most loyal fans, who supported the album’s Kickstarter campaign.
The tracks were recorded over 2 weeks in an Island studio called Empire Sound, alongside some excellent local musicians, who’re now great friends and band mates with Stubbs. After the whole thing was mixed, and then mastered in London by Tim Debney, it was ready to go.
Offering up top notch instrumentation, exquisite vocals and messages straight from the heart, Light of My Life marks a truly impressive debut from Ben Stubbs.
