An arson investigation has been launched following a fire at a block of flats in the Hunnyhill area of Newport during the early hours of this morning (Friday).
Emergency services were called to Hookes Way at just gone 04:00 to reports of a blaze within the communal stairwell area of a block located adjacent to the dual carriageway, as first reported by Island Echo.
4 appliances from Newport and Cowes were mobilised to the incident, with firefighters donning breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.
Significant damage has been caused by the fire, evident from the black charring on the outside wall and the gutted interior. 1 resident has told Island Echo they were awoken from their bed with shouts of ‘there’s a fire’.
It has been confirmed that a joint investigation between Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is to take place later today as it is believed the fire was set deliberately.
Police officers are maintaining a scene guard at Hookes Way this morning ahead of the arrival of fire investigators.
Fire crews stood down and returned to station following the stop message at 06:00.
