According to recent reports, Arsenal are considering making an offer for current Crystal Palace centre-back, Marc Guehi. With the defender’s performances for Crystal Palace and England having caught the eye, they see him as a solid option to improve their back line and make their defence – which is already solid compared to the rest of the Premier League top five – even more concrete. But while Arsenal undoubtedly have a good shot at signing Guehi, there is another club in the mix. It was only a few months ago that Manchester United were tied to Guehi, with reports suggesting that the club was contemplating a bid to close a deal on the £55 million player. And if the last few weeks are anything to go by, it’s Manchester that will need him the most. But why? The Coventry Conundrum When expert sports betting anchor Dean Etheridge was giving his pre-game roundup of the Manchester United vs Coventry City semi-final, we’re not sure even he knew could have predicted what was coming. Everyone who watched that game thought Man Utd had it in the bag after 58 minutes. Fernandes, Maguire and McTominay had all put in stunning performances, silencing Coventry fans and assuring that they’d not only make the FA Cup Final, but cruise into it. Only Coventry had other ideas. It took them a total of 71 minutes to unlock the Man Utd defence, but once they did, it was an onslaught. Simms, O’Hare, and Wright raced into the opposition box and came away with some stunning goals, leaving the Man Utd dream – supposedly – in tatters and the Man Utd fans wondering what went wrong. Of course, Man Utd ended up winning the game by the barest of all margins, but the questions still remained after the final whistle blew. How did Coventry find a way through? Why did Man Utd fall apart so quickly, and what’s the big, underlying problem that led to this result? Reigniting Man Utd’s Defence At the end of the day, it all comes down to defence. Although stars like Maguire are undoubtedly world-class, having a ‘superstar maverick’ in the back row is not always as beneficial as it seems. This isn’t like having a striker who can set a game alight, or a midfielder who can make a break from nothing. The defence section of a football team has to be reliable and efficient. While Maguire is both of those things, he can also be a loose cannon, and that doesn’t always help his team’s cause. Likewise, his defending counterparts don’t appear to have the ability to pull the defence into check. If you’re going to have a star like Maguire in a team, you need to have support pillars – defenders who can give him free rein in the middle while forming a solid wall on either side. Guehi to the Rescue? This, seemingly, is what Manchester United are after with Marc Guehi. If Guehi is anything, then he’s reliable. Unlike Maguire, Guehi rarely dives into challenges that haven’t been calculated inside his head. He goes about his job without making himself the centre of attention, leading his team to victories by forming a solid backline that opponents struggle with. In many ways, he’s the perfect defender – someone you wouldn’t be surprised to see turn up to a legends Football game later down the line. Alongside Maguire, Man Utd could have a defence that does everything. It has that spark and flair that allows the midfielders to play with a higher line, but it has that strength and resilience that can stop sudden comebacks – like the one we saw Coventry pull off – from derailing the whole project. Whether Man United will get Guehi remains to be seen – with Arsenal also looking to put a bid in, things remain very right – but if they do manage to nab Guehi, it could be the key they’ve been looking for to a solid 2024/25 season.
