The annual Easter duck race at Shide in Newport will take place on Saturday (16th April) in aid of Aspire Ryde.
At 12 noon, some 1,000 ducks will be ready to float downriver in a competitive but fun race. It takes around 20 minutes for the ducks to go from some deep water to fast running shallow water.
A duck race may sound easy enough but it is quite a complicated process and involves 2 volunteers in full waterproof gear moving with the ducks to make sure they don’t become stuck on the river banks.
A total of 1,000 numbered ducks are being sold to raise funds for Aspire. The ducks can be bought at Wight Building Supplies, The Dairyman’s Daughter at Arreton, The Bargeman’s Rest in Newport, Jewsons in Sandown and at the Aspire Cafe and Aspire Shop in Ryde. You can also buy online at https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/mypage/duckrace22.
Ducks are £1 each and all money raised goes to Aspire. The winning duck will win £50 with many other prizes up for grabs.
