Members of the WI from across the Isle of Wight came together to take part in a bake-off competition on Monday (10th June). Whitwell, Brighstone, Shanklin Hyde, Alverstone and the Rydettes each sent along a pair of hopeful bakers to the Downside Centre in Newport to participate in the inaugural challenge, organised by Georgina Moon. Each pair worked together to make shortbread using the same WI recipe, as well as making biscuits of their own choice. The standard of entries was extremely high and included custard creams, chocolate chip cookies, rhubarb and custard biscuits and gingernuts. Rachel Thompson, the manager of the Downside community centre, was asked to judge the entries and had a difficult job in choosing the winners. After tasting all the biscuits, Rachel declared that Karen Dyke and Gail Scott from Alverstone WI were the overall winners, who were ably assisted by their ever-helpful mascot, Alvera. Everyone agreed that the afternoon had been a great success, with hopes that it will become a regular feature of the WI programme on the Island.

Well deserved Karen and all. What a delightful group photograph a world away from the TV contestants typically PC line up.
So whilst less tick boxes would be filled the scrumptious food would more than make up for that.
Well done Moff, Master Chef next.
