German supermarket chain Aldi have opened their second store on the Isle of Wight today (Thursday), almost 2 years after Island Echo revealed the company’s plans.
Shoppers queued at the newly-built Lake store located at Spithead Business Centre for the 08:00 opening, kept warm by breakfast rolls and tea supplied by the company.
The queue began at 20:00 last night when 1 keen local took up his position at the front doors in anticipation of receiving a golden ticket. After queuing for 12 hours he won a 40″ television, whilst others won goody bags and even a sat nav.
A total of 100 golden tickets were handed out.
The ribbon was cut by Store Manager Lee Illman, who welcomed shoppers into the store for the first time.
The store stands at 1,140 sqm and is supported by 99 car parking spaces. Some 38 jobs have been created.
Aldi is open Monday-Saturday between 08:00 and 22:00 and Sundays between 10:00 and 16:00.
