Supermarket giant Aldi has confirmed that it will be opening another store on the Isle of Wight – this time in Newport.
Joining Costa and McDonald’s, Aldi is the latest national chain to announce that it will be heading to St George’s Retail Park.
The new store will complement existing Aldi outlets in Cowes and Lake.
The news has been confirmed through a licensing application to the Isle of Wight Council, where the supermarket giant is seeking permission to sell alcohol. If the licence is approved, it would allow the shop to sell alcohol to customers for all the hours it is proposed to be open — 06:00 to midnight, Monday to Sunday.
Documents submitted as part of the application are asking for the licence to start from 8th September, despite the store not being physically built yet. In fact, not a single spade has been put into the ground…
A second round of planning permission for the St George’s Retail Park was approved earlier this year following changes to the designs — which saw the addition of the Costa Drive-Thru and a shrinking in overall retail floor space.
Plans for a retail park on the former home of Newport Football Club have been in the works for years, with designs first unveiled in 2018.
Now, 4 years later, preliminary work has started at the football’s new ground near the Racecourse Roundabout in Whippingham but final planning conditions are waiting to be discharged before building work can start. It has been required by the Isle of Wight Council that the football ground is available to use before the retail units can be brought into use.

This is very old news. Aldi stated their intention to build a store there years ago. And it will probably still be years before it does get built. I will definitely use it when it is there as Aldi and Lidl don’t take the mick with their prices like all the other supermarkets do.
I hope the store is not granted an alcohol licence, the Council can reduce alcohol abuse by limiting access to it , that is by reducing the number of off licences, and the hours during which alcohol can be sold.
Alcohol over consumption is a health hazard, a cause of much street violence and domestic abuse and destroys families and neighbourhoods.

Also another out of town supermarket adds many more nails into the coffin of our decaying town centres, when will the Council start applying logic and forming a long term strategy to their planning and licence applications , the future is looking very bleak for our High Streets.
Get a life. Allowing a supermarket to sell alcohol will make no overall difference to people’s drinking habits. As for Newport town centre, it is a dump that should be bulldozed.

If you care to look at the numerous academic studies published world wide, the overall conclusion is that excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol abuse is directly related to low prices and easy availability.
Both these factors are a direct result of the UK supermarket’s policy to sell alcohol at low prices and make it available for extended periods every day.
This leads ultimately to alcohol related violence and crime, and cost us all in taxes to pick up the pieces.The victims of drunken abuse and violence pay a much higher price, and families of alcohol abusers really do suffer.
Actually you are wrong. Supermarkets do not force people to drink, it is their choice. They do not encourage people to get drunk, it is their choice. Why restrict supermarkets just because some individuals cannot control their drinking habits? If you are so concerned about people drinking, why don’t you direct your anger towards pubs, because that is where most people who can’t control their “habit” go to drink. It is down to personal choice and not being a dick.
Our local Aldi sells only wine, no other alcohol and they do a great business. Most of their products are cheaper and above the quality of the other stores. We eat better because of Aldi, and not a grocery store chain has closed since they opened. There is an Ingles and Food Lion within a half mile and they haven’t closed.
I love Aldi and support their excellent food offering, I am not against the new store, just the sale of alcohol at yet another outlet in Newport because of the mayhem caused by drunken idiots who cannot drink responsibly.
I am sure they would succeed without selling alcohol, and wish them every successs.

Not at all. I actually came face to face with Alcoholics in my work, ad saw their lives destroyed and worse still the effect on their families and loved ones.
The ready availability of alcohol over extended shop hours and deliberate low pricing does facilitate misuse in those who cannot control their intake.
Alcohol is scientifically proven to increase the risk of violence and abuse, and the victims can be damaged physically and psychologically for life

Could people please understand that drink lincences are til midnight already around newport-alcohol use and crime hasnt changed.
Lock downs forced people to change buying habbits, so new licences do not impact boozy chavs etc.

Bet ASDA are happy – not. Morrison’s will have to improve, the standard of some veg has really dropped in the Newport store, I now travel to Lake as the whole layout and atmosphere is so much better and at least the veg looks fresh. About time Morrison’s in Newport was upgraded to the same standard.

when another supermarket moves in, near to Asda, all the lemmings will go across the road for something a couple of pence cheaper.
that will make Asda fight back with even cheaper prices, reduce wages to make it happen and cut staff. Cheap is not sustainable.
the large supermarkets have ruined the small shops, well, actually it’s the customers that have ruined the small shops, by going for cheaper prices and now the supermarkets will fight it out. Watch out for collateral damage.
