53-year-old Anthony Edward Ayres has been told to complete a 6-month alcohol treatment programme after a drunken assault at Sandown’s Sandham House, which resulted in a man being punched in the pancreas.
The Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday how Ayres, now of Cheverton Copse Caravan Park on a temporary basis, had made threats to place a bag over another man’s head, cut his throat and dump him in the river on 23rd April this year – threats which his defence said were made as ‘banter’ and in the heat of the moment.
Staff at Sandham House, on Fort Street, responded to the incident in the garden area of the accommodation, which then saw Ayres raise a clenched fist to the face of a female member of staff. She feared she was going to be assaulted.
During the incident, a very drunk Anthony Ayres ended up punching his friend and fellow resident Kieran Miles in the stomach, resulting in significant pain for the victim. Ayres denied that this was intentional with defence solicitor Oscar Vincent explaining to the court that the act was ‘play fighting’, but that his client accepted the physical contact was reckless rather than deliberate.
Ayres, who is a carpenter by trade and received a letter of support from his employer, is said to have been immediately apologetic.
As a result of the assault, Ayres lost his residence at Sandham House and therefore soon breached the requirements of a previously issued curfew, something he admitted on Tuesday.
For the charges of common assault and assault by beating, Magistrates ordered Anthony to complete a 24-month community order with a requirement for 30 rehabilitation days and a 6-month alcohol treatment programme. He was told to pay £50 compensation, as well as costs of £85 with a surcharge of £95.

Another ungrateful, alcoholic piece of **** these people are given shelter, food, warmth and this is how they repay the people who are trying to help them. Waste of space. Threatening to punch a female staff member. What a poor excuse of a man.
Love the defence if that’s banter and play fighting !!!!!!
God knows how he would describe the incident if the accused had of carried out his threats .
Let’s see if the slap on the wrist works ????????
How does one get “punched in the pancreas”? Did the victim move his stomach and intestines out of the way?
Pancreatic trauma can be caused by fighting. Martial Artists get it. And some people who have car crashes. The stomach and intestines are much less vulnerable. They would know it was his pancreas that was damaged from his symptoms.
