New figures released by the RSPCA have revealed that there were 42 reports of animals being beaten on the Isle of Wight during the summer months in recent years – with an 88% rise in incidents since 2020.
The statistics form part of the charity’s Summer Cruelty Campaign, which highlights a spike in animal cruelty during the warmer months. For many animals, summer is not a time of fun and freedom, but instead a period when abuse significantly increases.
On the Isle of Wight, the number of reports made to the RSPCA’s cruelty line has nearly doubled over a 4-year period, rising from 9 incidents in the summer of 2020 to 17 during summer 2024 – an 88% increase. In total, 42 reports of beatings were received across the summers from 2020 to 2024.
Ian Briggs, Head of the RSPCA’s Special Operations Unit, has said:
“These are really distressing and stark figures. One report of an animal being beaten every half an hour is a horrible thought, but sadly this is the reality in summer when our cruelty line receives a beating report every 30 minutes.
“It isn’t clear why there has been such a dramatic increase in abuse against animals, but what is clear is that animals are suffering at the hands of people on a much bigger scale than many people realise.
“This is why our Summer Cruelty Campaign is so important to highlight that for thousands of animals, summer is a season of pain and suffering when cruelty peaks. As the RSPCA braces to help tackle animal cruelty, we need your help now more than ever to continue to rescue animals in desperate need of care.”
While national figures show dogs are the most likely to be targeted in beatings, with bulldog breeds and Staffies among the most commonly abused, specific breed breakdowns for the Isle of Wight have not been released.
The RSPCA says a combination of increased awareness and the widespread use of CCTV, smartphones and doorbell cameras may be helping to expose cruelty that previously went unnoticed, making it easier to take action.

And what happens to the vile scum who carry out these crimes – yes, like beating a human these are crimes!! If they actually get prosecuted it’s a slap on the wrist, a minimal fine and maybe a ban from keeping animals for a short time. It should be a lifetime ban and huge fine, taken out of benefits if need be.
