Racecourse on the outskirts of Newport looks set to become a 40mph zone, with approval for the changes set to be made within days.
The reduction from 50mph is part of the plans for the proposed new home of Newport FC – although the stadium has been in the pipeline for more than 5 years now.
Traffic regulations set to be approved by the Isle of Wight Council at the start of May will help ensure safe entrance and exit to the football ground. A consultation attracted 19 representations, 10 for and 9 against.
If going into the site, you will only be able to turn left, coming from the Racecourse roundabout. Leaving the football ground, you will only be able to turn left, sending all traffic to the Racecourse roundabout.
The authority says there is a risk to pedestrians and cyclists, the safe and free movement of traffic and emergency access if no restrictions are put in place, once the new football ground is operating – if it ever gets built.
Last year, some boundary hedges were cleared but work has since stopped on the site and conditions of the planning permission still need addressing.
The developers, South Coast Leisure, have agreed to fund the necessary work to implement the restrictions on the roads.
Councillor Phil Jordan, the cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, is set to make a delegated decision on 9th May.

a puerile attempt at slowing up traffic as a way of reducing the queues into newport isn’t solving the issue of too many people living on the island – get rid of most of the freeloaders that have arrived, especially those dingy people we see wandering around, that the council has underhandedly accepted.

Well unless your head is in a different universe, are you not aware of just how many speeding motorists there are on this island? Couple that with generally bad driving by many, this is exactly why there are so many accidents in this island.
If people stuck to driving just below the speed limit, yes that’s right, you don’t have to drive right on the limit and you certainly don’t exceed it….not unless your ‘ignorant’

The entrance to the football ground should be from the roundabout then there would be no need for the 40 mph speed limit with all its extra polution.
The main artery between Ryde and Newport, an important major road, so what do our planners do? Cause more congestion by slowing the traffic down even more.
Ok, perhaps not entirely their fault as the stadium should never have been approved for that site in the first place, but now it is, for safety sake, it needs a reduction.
What would have made more sense is to have a variable speed limit in place and only reduce it at match times?
Meanwhile it’s wacky races down Staplers Road.
Don’t worry there is an application in to build more houses off Staplers so they’ll be lowering that one ‘for safety reasons’ too

Most of Fairlee Road bar the entry to Newport is not in a fit enough state to do more than 40mph, more like a rollacoaster. How often will the yet to be built football ground be in use per week, and if they haven’t started building it yet, how can you ensure the costs of road alteration will be met. This whole debacle of an “improvement” has been marked since instigation.
Will the 40 mph come into line in 2033 when the quick growing hedge will be 2 feet high and the intended stadium plans have to be re submitted and changed to a drive through crematorium and fast food outlet?
Unless permanent Cameras are installed it will never happen.

Well..not sure about the factory but aside from that..the road is like a cart teack with its potholes. That needs addressing before encouraging more traffic on this road. I can see that 40 is a good idea near the entrance to Island Harbour junction but aside from there whats wro g with 50?

I notice no mention of a proper pedestrian crossing? So, when even 60 people leave the site to head towards Newport, they will still have to cross the road to get to the bus stop.
Try it….for those that like living life on the edge, try crossing the road there when it is busy…or even when it isn’t!
I simply cannot believe this has not been factored in as this situation is well observed in other parts of the country with similar layouts. Some even have a foot tunnel…but that word is strictly taboo on this island.

£50 instant fine for any cyclist using the road. Use the cycle track, that is what it is there for.
They should open the defunct cycle track that runs perpendicular to the road, set back one field, and that’s half the problem sorted.
It’s not fun cycling towards buses and trucks up on the pavement there. There is no margin for error, from the cyclists or drivers.
Why not have a speed limit of 40 mph only when there’s a match on? Better still have the entrance in East Cowes Rd.

If you’re coming FROM the roundabout, you’ll need to turn RIGHT (unless Island Roads potholes are now so deep that we can achieve tunnelling).
Ask the council how many miles of new double yellow lines they have painted, how many new parking restrictions they have introduced and how many speed limits they have also reduced on the island over the last 15 years and you will be shocked – the relentless focus on making motoring difficult for the little people, by using either ‘safety’ or ‘climate change’ as their excuse, is a diktat from Whitehall as they want everyone out of cars and onto public transport or confined to your 15 minute zones – it’s a WEF dystopia and every little nudge or change the local authorities make moves us one step closer in their great reset net zero plans
Re-open old slip road on opposite side field one way in from Newport , right turn in left out back roundabout

All goes to support the fact that that it is the wrong place for Newport’s football ground.(Thank you South Coast Leisure !!!!). As was obvious this will lead to the urbanisation of everything between Newport and East Cowes, next comes the housing sites.

650m, the approximate distance between the racecourse roundabout to the bus stop at Binfield corner.
At 50mph compared to the same distance at 40mph would be a difference in time of about 5-6 seconds. What very important people you must be to consider yourselves to be so inconvenienced by such a delay.

Totally agree I love trying to get to a ton forty before the top of the hill .Makes no difference what restrictions are in place I feel the need for speed.
In London most areas have implemented 20 is plenty
which is ridiculous and dangerous, hence moving to the
Island a few months ago to escape the Mad House.
What with the 7 day a week congestion charges, ULEZ charges and
permit parking and cycle lanes popping up everywhere and many Roads closed with
Plant pots , they are pricing motorists off the road and discouraging people to drive.
The plan re the climate hoax is to get motorists off the road.
God knows what the country / world will be like by 2030.

No speeding limits, NO driving rules, NO congestion charges, NO ULEZ charges and
NO Permit Parking.
That is why so many people are making the move to the Island and Bembridge is now

Why should people suffer in London when living on the Island is stress free.
I say good luck to persons moving to the Island it’s good for business and we pay the asking price
of properties, so it’s good for sellers and good for estate agents and good for local builders
who we use to renovate our homes when arriving on the Island.

My old mobility scooter won’t do 40mph anyway, so it won’t affect me, the only thing that does is the 8 pints in the Folly on a Thursday lunchtime that’s why I always scoot home on the river bank path & not the racecourse!

The only people that obey speed limits are the safe drivers. You could put any number on it, the dangerous drivers will just ignore it and speed.
Instead of reducing the capacity of the roads causing heavy traffic, which will cause more accidents, maybe instead bring back the police that were removed from the islands roads.
No, the gullible, do as you are told sheep, obey speed limits – the rest of us, drive to the conditions of the road – if it is open and clear, such as the racecourse later in the evenings – get your boot down and get moving.
Keep it 50 just reduce at match start/end times. It’s not those doing 50having accidents, it’s those doing 70/80plus …. Council just generate thing’s to do and spend council tax ….. Like they had 30limit by cricket club when no traffic,yet wedding or match etc now 40 again – no point in main road if speed limited.

The delays in planning seem to be down to certain members of the planning committee with a NImby attitude who resist the building and any improvement at any cost. These persons would object to restrictions on cyclists if they could . The imposition of a 40MPH limit, if sufficient substantiated evidence is shown, is a sound idea as there are too many hot heads screaming down the road without care to other road users. If this idea goes ahead thought must given to a cycle path from the roundabout through to Fairlee to get these ‘Lemmings’ off the road.
