4 candidates are vying for your vote in the forthcoming Police & Crime Commissioner election. Polls will open at 07:00 on Thursday 2nd May to find the region’s next commissioner, who will be in office until 2028. Votes can be cast until 22:00 that night. Over the past couple of weeks, Islanders have received polling cards through the postbox detailing how and when to vote. Polling cards are not received to vote, but ID is now required by law. So, who can you vote for next month? A total of 4 candidates have thrown their name into the ring including the incumbent Donna Jones for the Conservatives. Becky Williams for Labour, a councillor on Rushmoor Borough Council, will be standing alongside Don Jerrard for the Justice & Anti-Corruption Party, and Prad Bains for the Liberal Democrats. The role of a Police and Crime Commissioner – or PCC – is to act as the public’s voice of policing and hold the Chief Constable to account. They set the budget and priorities for the police force and provide strategic oversight to ensure progress is made. The Police and Crime Commissioner is the only major election Islanders will have to vote for this May as the Isle of Wight Council local elections will take place next year.

When do we get their CV’s? I have seen NOTHING so far… we need information about them don’t we???
Ms Hardy, a fair request, but, imo, will make very little difference to us who gets the position.
With prisons in Britain now filled with not only our own criminals, but those who float across daily, and previous arrivals offspring creating a situation whereby UK prison are operating at full capacity then these peoples hands are tied as to what they can do.
So, we will still see most all criminals getting pathetic sentences, small fines which will either not be paid, or paid out of benefits we fund, suspended sentence after sentence, and other useless weak schemes to appease only the foolish into thinking ‘something’ is being done.
Until the UK rids itself of unchecked, unwanted arrivals, this will never change.
Not really, as a PCC is not responsible for policy, only implementation. Putting bobbies where they need to be, addressing the issues surrounding street crime so it doesn’t happen in the first place. The assumption that everyone who ‘floats across’ is a criminal though needs addressing…mainly they have been trafficked, not coming by choice. Maybe you need to look at who is interested in looking for the CAUSES of crime before any of your concerns can be addressed. In almost every nation on the planet it’s caused by poverty. Change that, reduce the crimes.
Well said you..unfortunately..I don’t think you will get any support from this lot..but I for one…thank you for your comment.
Adding more dirt poor impoverished people on a truly NEVER ENDING amount will ONLY impoverish those that are inflicted by such.
Take in a random family yourself and YOU pay for their needs. Then, let us know if you are better off after doing so for a few years.
But no, so long as ‘others’ fund them, and then cherry pick the FEW who do pay more than their way, yet ignore all those who do commit vile crimes, who do use the system, those who do claim more in free rent and c.tax, education and health than they will EVER pay in.
You think we are thick, perhaps you ought be a politician for the far left, ignorant and up yourself enough to be over qualified imo.
I agree that it is not the role of the PCC to determine policy but even their role in implementation is limited to the strategic level in the development of a Police and Crime Plan. The direct operational responsibility for delivery lies with the Chief Constable and it is for the PCC to commission those services by providing funding then holding the Chief Constable to account for how the force delivers the police and crime plan. The natural conclusion to this arrangement is that it is ridiculous that Police and Crime Commissioners should be party political. In my view, they should all be politically independent. The force currently receives no additional funding to reflect the added cost of policing an island.
Such a bitter and out of tune song you sing.
It’s not the overseas incomers that are the problem. It’s the people who create the situations they are leaving that are the problem.
Who gave you the right to decide?
Just because it doesn’t suit you doesn’t mean you get to have it your way.
I neither smoke nor drink. I’d ban it all right now. I don’t watch football, ban it. Cars? Make people ride motor bikes instead. I prefer them.
Vegans? No thank you.
Jazz music? Small doses.
Kids on skateboards? Where ever they want. Just be careful around others. Refugees? Come on in, get dry, get straight and well help you get back home when you feel ready.
Or you can help us out in the meantime.
Ooh. I like this game.
Think I’m in love….
Only with yourself and perhaps the Labour party. Likely a single parent as few could bear to be with you unless odd, so maybe a match with Nay. God help any offspring, brainwashed from birth. Rainbow flags, non white dolls, and the Famous Five so censored that even Enid herself wouldn’t recognise her delightful characters.
Why bother. I filed mine in the bin when it arrived.
All useless, no different to Politicians, only care about themselves
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire receives an annual salary of £88,600.08. Surprised that more people aren’t running for this elected position on a tidy salary just for keeping an eye on the police. Only two people need to nominate potential candidates.
Oddly, the Chief of Staff and Monitoring Officer for the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office has a salary of £97,968.96
Not to mention expenses etc
And that’s not counting the, reported, seventeen people on the PCCs staff.
Not true about nominations… it needs a proposer, a seconder and 98 others and a deposit to stand as a candidate in this election of £5,000.
where is the democratic option to vote to disband the role
Indeed. The police, a bunch of self elected busy bodies where time and time again it’s been demonstrated that the vetting and selection process is woefully lacking, are a waste of time and money. Anything else added on to this mob of bullies and narcissists is just a redundant exercise. What does a police and crime commissioner do? Nothing, going by the parlous, shameless behaviour of a lot of officers. Defund the police and definitely scrap the laughable idea of a commissioner.
That’s not an unreasonable question. Wheras the decision to have elected Mayors are up to local referenda, this was imposed across the country. Like elected mayors it is a way of ‘americanising’ our political system. It is a role that is not needed and no one in the UK was calling out for the role.
Because most of the ‘constituencies’ including this one cover shire counties where there is a strong conservative vote, I suspected it was just a chance to give certain people jobs. Donna Jones, the Tory, lost out as an MP in Portsmouth South so they found her another job where she could win.
That lies with Parliament who created the role.
Looking at the stats of crime in Newport and Ryde (up 80% and 39%) it won’t be Donna Jones. And as the biggest area by far is violence and sexual offences, the constant trumpeting of court time for theft from a supermarket is an obscene joke. (5663 V and SO, 778 shoplifting).
Thats a bit unfair, violence and sexual offence investigations/cases are probably a lot more complex, shoplifting are usually slam dunks, offenders caught on CCTV and guilty pleas.
Mainly due to big difference between reported crime and successfully prosecuted crime. Island police have one of lowest rates of successful prosecution in the country at 3-5%. They rarely bother prosecuting V and SO unless they get a full confession on the spot or there are multiple credible witnesses.
If you really want to know what crimes are being committed in your area and where, get on Streetcheck. You will be surprised by how many crimes are actually reported and how few are actually prosecuted. Useful for identifying your local scumbags too.
And even then, a significant proportion of crimes are never reported because the victims think it is a waste of time as no one will investigate.
Which actually supports my comment. If 5663 are statistical offences and V and SO under-reported it makes the gap even bigger. And yes to ExtraD, but that’s targeting the low-hanging fruit and therefore resourcing away from people crime and favouring material crime. My point was that historically, conservatism and Tories support measures to combat crimes against property more than crimes against the person, so don’t expect those 3-5% stats to change if we don’t vote DJ out.
Island statistics are not remotely representative of the entire country. Throughout the UK, theft/burglary accounts for three times more reported offences than violence and sexual offences. The incidence of theft/burglary is far lower on the island. Most reported offences on the island are domestic abuse and fraud. There is obviously a very low success rate for prosecutions of domestic abuse.
Don’t know anything about them apart from their political allegiance. No policy or manifesto of change, or what would make Policing better.
By the way in my opinion the PCC shouldn’t be in a political party and be completely independent.
Suggestion if nobody bothers to vote .. in a democratic way, then this waste of time PCC role becomes redundant, put the money back into shoring up the Police Force we do not need or want part time Police stations.. and papering over the cracks as the current PCC does so well and then self congratulates for what ??
I couldn’t give a monkies uncle about this, though I would like to see the hideous conservative lose her job, so I will vote just help get rid of it.
Whoever wins, nothing will change. A criminal waste of money.
Voting for any of them will justify their existence, Had the flyer from Jones, its incredible what she claims to have done. I have honestly, hand on heart, not noticed any difference. Certainly no more copers on the beat, well not in my neck of the woods.
