Speed enforcement work carried out by Police officers from both sides of the Solent at locations across the Isle of Wight caught no less than 268 motorists exceeding the speed limit last month.
Throughout May, the Safer Roads Unit, part of the Joint Operations Unit, conducted mobile speed camera enforcement across 53 visits to more than 20 locations.
Recent roads policing work has focused on targeting drivers who display behaviours under the ‘Fatal Four’ banner. These are the 4 poor driving habits that often lead to serious or fatal collisions – drink/drug driving, driving without a seatbelt, speeding, and using a mobile phone whilst driving.
Superintendent Jim Pegler, district commander for policing on the Isle of Wight, said:
“We are committed to tackling these dangerous driving behaviours, and will endeavour to keep the public updated on the work we have been carrying out.
“We encourage the public to please keep reporting any concerns and offences to the police. While you may not see an immediate police response, it helps us understand the most affected areas on the Island to inform where we need to carry out enforcement activity and further education to road users.”
Lewis Campbell, road safety officer for the Isle of Wight Council says:
“We are grateful for the police’s efforts in targeting the ‘Fatal Four’ driving behaviours across the Island and are supportive of enforcement and education campaigns that aim to improve road safety for all road users. We will be working with partners on an awareness campaign in the near future which will support this work.”

Very misleading headline as the tickets issued were for a variety of reasons not just speeding.
Well they might get one out of the fatal four with their revenue generating vans, but not sure how they will catch any of the other three…
This is firm evidence we need more police on the roads looking out for these idiots who just love to speed.
IF hidden cameras were used instead of a huge Police van, with every other motorist flashing their lights to warn of their presence then you could times that number by 100 fold.
As it is, we all know the blitz is over, and the chances of being nabbed once the token gesture public Police tour of the usual spots is over is very low, so most will ‘Carry on speeding’.
Excellent lots of cash for them there then
A nice, easy, lucrative target for the police, how are they doing on burglary, rape, domestic violence and the ever increasing nuisance of illegal noise levels from exhausts all of which take time and effort to fix
when the juice drys up. We can walk the roads again. Come on let’s have it

That is a laugh, when you report dangerous driving, with dashcam footage as proof, they do not even bother to reply other than the standard ” if you do not hear from us within 6 weeks we are taking no action”

meanwhile shoplifters, burglars, junkies, alco’s and other deadbeat losers are given free reign to roam the streets unimpeded, whilst the police target regular members of society for driving their cars.
Well fines should pay cost of manpower etc,shame they don’t go to police who could then enforce more.So many go past our house doing 50/60 mph in a 30mph every day,rain or shine, one day there will be a serious accident .
They need to come to Brading along the main road, 30mph you have got to be kidding!!!!
Mr Pegler is having a laugh, if you report a road crime or incident even with supporting dashcam footage all you get is a stock email telling you that if you havn’t been contacted in 6 weeks they are not interested, don’t hold your breath waiting for that contact.
