A wide range of scores have been dished out to Island shops, restaurants, bars and pubs after environmental health inspectors’ latest batch of food hygiene standards ratings.
Whilst nowhere scored a score of 0 (urgent improvement necessary), 2 establishments scored poorly with Wight Grill in Newport and Hotel Maria in Sandown scoring a lowly 1 out of 5.
Restaurants, cafes and food production companies on the Isle of Wight are rated on a scale from 0 ‘Urgent Improvement Necessary’ to 5 ‘Very Good’, in line with government guidance under the Food Standards Agency.
The inspections are carried out by the Isle of Wight Council’s environmental health officers where establishments are ranked across three categories — hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and food safety management.
A score is then given to the business to determine how safe and clean they are.

Eat at home if you live here.
Rip off prices, fake welcome IF at all, as the only welcome is your wallets content, and the risk of shoddy practices now that all staff have vanished from the planet, meaning they will employ anything with a pulse up’s the risk of a poor experience and paying OTT for it.
Leave eating out to those who come here to get ripped off as we all do when on hols.
Gotta be some cheap grub going there then!
Inspections are carried out by Isle of Wight council’s health inspectors. That explains why Hotel Maria was not closed down immediately, more council incompetence. Should have guessed.
is business not hard enough without the council targeting businesses and then publishing details, the fact is those caught will probably be better than the 5* rated places who will ,more than likely gloat and become complacent
Any business serving food should be stopped from trading if their score is 2 or less until they can show they have made required improvements, these places are putting peoples health at risk.
Don’t surprise me Hotel Maria got 1 star, I’ve seen them put cooked meat straight from oven to freezer and drop food on the floor and still serve it to guests
YUCK!!!
