A man in his 40s from Ryde has died after his car plunged into the sea at Gurnard late last night (Saturday).
Emergency services rushed to Shore Road at just before 23:30 after receiving reports that a vehicle had careered into the sea beside the local sailing club, as first reported by Island Echo.
Police, firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene to find a green Ford Mondeo in the water, with fire crews swiftly securing the saloon with a strop.
The driver was pulled from the vehicle but sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, his life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fears that other persons may have been in the car led to a search of the area involving HM Coastguard. It has been confirmed that no other persons have been located, nor thought to have been in the Mondeo when it entered the water.
Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident including whether the vehicle was driven into the water, or if the tragic incident was an accident.
It’s understood specialist collision investigators were called in before first light to forensically examine the scene.
The man’s next of kin have been informed and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
Officers are now appealing for witnesses following last night’s fatal incident and would like to speak to anyone with information.
