UPDATED: A large sinkhole has opened up on The Strand in Ryde this evening (Friday), forcing the road to be closed in both directions.
A hole around 1m wide and half a metre deep has developed on a stretch of recently resurfaced road following flood alleviation works by Southern Water.
The hole appeared at around 17:00 after a dip was noticed in the road by local residents.
Island Roads are on site and have closed the road from the junction with Cornwall Street and Monkton Street.
The Strand is due to be the diversion route for traffic during Sunday’s scooter rally ride out, which will see the Esplanade closed in both directions from Superbowl.
UPDATE @ 21:10 – A Southern Water spokesman has this evening said:
“We have filled in the small void in the road which appeared in The Strand this evening.
“It is not clear what caused the issue but we are carrying our extensive flood alleviation works in the area.
“The road was quickly reopened and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption.”
