Southern Vectis is calling on Isle of Wight women to consider a new career as a bus driver.
The operator is hosting a special event at Newport Bus Station on Tuesday 2nd December for any women seeking a fresh start for 2026 – whether they are seriously considering a new career or just curious to learn more.
Southern Vectis general manager Richard Tyldsley.
“This is the perfect chance to explore what bus driving is really like.
“Across the UK, women are vastly under-represented in this field.
“Our aim, alongside our parent company the Go-Ahead Group, is to better reflect those we serve. Currently, 22.6 percent of our driving team is female – which is higher than the national average. However, we want to increase this to 50 percent within the next 10 years.
“This latest event, is part of that. We want to encourage more local women to consider working with us as a driver.
“One of the highlights of the event is the chance to chat with our own female driving team. These are women who have gone through the training, joined the company, and are now out on the road everyday – so they know exactly what it’s like.

It’s just going to be a relaxed space to get real, honest, answers from those who already work for Southern Vectis.
“Our training team will be on-hand too, to talk through the process of becoming a qualified bus driver. Anyone wishing to attend can find out more and register on our website. They will receive a warm welcome and refreshments in our travel shop on Tuesday – and we look forward to seeing them there.”
Southern Vectis’ women’s recruitment day takes place on Tuesday 2nd December, at the travel shop in Newport Bus Station, between 10:00 and 14:00.
