A Bembridge woman has received treatment for a bite to her hand after both she and her dog were attacked by a German Shepherd earlier this week.
The incident took place during a dog walk on Forelands Beach on the morning of Bank Holiday Monday.
Tanya Gorton has taken to social media to explain that she has ended up with a tetanus jab and strong antibiotics after suffering a very sore and painful wound to her hand, which required hospital treatment.
Monday’s attack unfolded when a large German Shepherd started barking and lunging at Tanya’s dog, who retreated. The German Shepherd – also known as an Alsatian – was pulling on its long lead, which the owner let go of. The dog then ran to attack Tanya’s pet, with Tanya herself then getting tangled up in the lead before suffering a bite to her hand.
Tanya says:
“The dog was out of control and showing very aggressive behaviour.
“It wasn’t a normal run of the mill dog altercation where there was a trigger or provocation and over quickly. It looked like it was an attack dog – it would have been terrifying for a lot of people”.
“I hate to think what would have happened if it was a child, smaller dog or more vulnerable person. Please if your dog is aggressive, at the very least put a muzzle on them to prevent injury to others”.

Police have been informed of the incident, which comes just days after a woman was attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in Newport.
How many people (especially children) have to be hurt/maimed/killed before the dog lobby gets the message?
Stats, think how many million dogs are walked each day running free, then think how rare it is to be bitten. Agree that some owners use dogs as a weapon, yet so far, and sadly not for much longer that ‘type’ are still atm not too common living amongst the more civilised people here.
