The driver of a Renault Clio has been left shaken but uninjured after crashing into a fallen tree on the outskirts of Ryde this morning (Friday).
Severe gales and heavy rain overnight has resulted in a number of trees, branches and other debris being brought down across the Island.
Tricky driving conditions led to this morning’s crash on Stroudwood Road, between Upton and Havenstreet.
Island Roads have now closed the road in both directions and have called in contractors to clear the obstruction.
Amazingly, despite the significant damage to the front of her car, the driver managed to walk away from the collision uninjured.
Southern Vectis’ Route 37 buses are currently unable to serve Stroudwood. As a result, buses are diverting via Upton Road, Pellhurst Road and Newnham Road into Verwood Drive, Binstead to continue a normal line of route.
Trees are reported to be down at Merrie Gardens in Lake and Coach Lane in Brading.

Hope she’s not too shaken up over this. I had a tree come down in front of me. I was glad I had enough space to go round otherwise my car would have ended up like this one
For once on this island the tree really did hit the car rather than the other way round.
For once?? have you been around for every accident involving a tree then? I think not.
Salty don
Nobody took any notice of me i told you the trees are out to get us
The first thoughts I had driving away this morning around 6am was fallen trees that could be on the road, less than five minutes into my journey I came across one on a blind bend on Aps Manor Road Shanklin.
Luckily I was prepared for the unexpected and avoided a collition, we should all have the right mindset in all conditions.
Truth, you are a ninja of the highway. Kudos to you.
The tree always comes off best, which is why I never go out in these conditions unless it’s absolutely essential.
For ONCE our council has the answer. To rid the Island of trees and other green areas, then build over everything.
You might then get hit by a drunk, or drugged, or stolen car driver, you may well get mugged, attacked by the ‘quality’ tenants who will fill these homes, but the risk of having a tree fall upon you will be much reduced.
Vote them OUT next time.
