An off-duty Police officer riding a motorcycle was nearly hit by a drunk driver, who blew nearly 3x the limit at the roadside, a court has heard.
Charlie Urry, 34, of Trinity Road in Ventnor, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (14th April).
Urry was seen by an off-duty Police officer, who was riding a motorcycle down Forest Road in Newport, at around 23:00 on 8th March this year.
Giles Fletcher, prosecuting, told the court how the witness saw a vehicle coming towards him, before having to slam on his brakes. He was nearly hit by the vehicle Urry was in control of.
The off-duty officer then followed the defendant and waited for the vehicle to park, before alerting on-duty officers to attend the scene.
It is here that a roadside breathalyser test was carried out, revealing a reading of 103 microgrammes – the legal limit being 35.
Urry was subsequently arrested and taken to Newport Police Station, where he was asked several times to blow into the evidential machine – but deliberately failed to do so, saying “Why the f**k should I?”.
The 34-year-old will next appear before the court on 23rd June for sentencing.
To refuse to blow I am lost for words especially
