The Government has once again stepped up measures to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by introducing another nationwide lockdown with all non-essential premises to close from Thursday 5th November.
The rules will be in place throughout the majority of November from 00:01 on 5th November until at least Wednesday 2nd December – but the Government could extend the lockdown beyond this point and in the final run up to Christmas.
The following businesses and premises must close:
- Restaurants, bars, pubs and cafes – but takeaway and delivery service can continue (no alcohol)
- Hotels, hostels, B&Bs and holiday parks – should only open for those travelling for work purposes and limited other exemptions
- All non-essential retail including clothing stores, electronics stores, vehicle showrooms, travel agents, betting shops, auction houses, tailors, car washes, tobacco and vape shops
- Indoor and outdoor leisure facilities including bowling alleys, leisure centres and gyms, swimming pools, golf courses and driving ranges, dance studios, stables and riding centres, soft play facilities, climbing walls and climbing centres, archery and shooting ranges, water and theme parks
- Entertainment venues including theatres, concert halls, cinemas, museums and galleries, casinos, adult gaming centres and arcades, bingo halls, bowling alleys, concert halls, zoos and other animal attractions, botanical gardens;
- Personal care facilities including hair, beauty and nail salons, tattoo parlours, spas, massage parlours, body and skin piercing services, non-medical acupuncture and tanning salons.
- Places of worship for services – except funerals following the social distancing guidance; places of worship should remain open for solitary prayer. Live streaming of a service without audience would be permissible
Food shops, supermarkets, garden centres and certain other retailers providing essential goods and services can remain open.
Non-essential retail can remain open for delivery to customers and click-and-collect and, unlike March, playgrounds can also remain unlocked.
Further clarification on which business types must close and those that can remain open is due in the coming days. However, provisionally it is understood the following businesses can remain open:
- Supermarkets

Businesses and premises that breach them will be subject to prohibition notices, and potentially unlimited fines.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Just waiting for a vaccine and making sure the hospitals are not overrun, it’s not rocket science my friend:)
ther AINT going to be a full working vaccine same with the flu ….. some work some dont some live some die……thats how its going to be forever.
They are not expecting different results. They are expecting the same results – suppression of the virus being able to spread to protect the NHS. Its very very very simple.
Thank you Island Echo for telling us in proper detail what can and cant stay open. You’ve explained this really well and it’s really helpful to no. As last time we have lockdown dos and don’ts wernt that clear well done
Sarc is the lowest form of wit
Not being sarcastic being serious… last time people had the excuse they didnt no what was what this time people will no so they cannot use it as a excuse
I think you must read the paper with rose tinted glasses. More shops will be open than what is on the list as they will start to sell essential items which they did not sell before.
I wonder if the council will use this as an excuse to close the dumps again. Some people will be using the spare time to tidy up their gardens before winter and getting rid of the rubbish is an essential part of this.
Why do we have the tips closed over lockdown it’s the best time people can use it instead of flytipping. Keep our country side looking great
Yet some filthy caravan is allowed on the Brading rd car park nr Knighton down.
Dumps are staying open this time by appointment only.
Many, many of the self employed will work for cash in hand, so getting the furlough payment and cash. Phone a few of them and see if in doubt.
No wonder the cash machines had run dry at Tesco yesterday
Like hairdressers etc, especially if you enjoy Turkey for Xmas lunch.
Our country is getting swindled big time, and even worst now as this lock down was expected, so you can imagine how many false ‘self employed’ businesses have been ‘set up’ etc with fake books, as they know HMG will never have the time, or man power to check such, and even IF so, no punishments given.
Not all self employed do that. I’m self employed and for the last 2 years I only accept card payment. Much easier for accounting and the money goes straight into my business bank account. Don’t paint all self employed as tax cheats.
Also furlough only pays a portion of wages most people need a full wage to cover mortgages and bills do they are often just trying to make up the shortfall. Don’t be so hard on people we all struggle in these times…well most of us!
Marcus, I didn’t, I said Many, not ‘all’, and of course ONLY the honest, will come on in defence. Those I personally know have done very well out of this furlough.
To some self employed, their ‘only’ folly has been that they never over the years ‘declared’ all their cash paying customers, so, now, when having to show their ‘books’ to claim for loss of earnings, have a ‘lower’ sum, than they could have shown if honest.
Whilst I understand it is annoying to be classes as a ‘bird’ of a feather…. trust me I am not, but also, understand that a lot of the most dishonest ARE self employed and truly many are milking this for all it is worth, but won’t admit such to the wider world.
The first lockdown i got nothing ziltch not a penny no help as i was newly self employed so this time around i wont even bother trying
Lack a day is right marcus in many cases. Builders, kitchen fitters, hair dressers, manicurists, gardeners, mechanics for a huge proportion did still keep working for cash. Certainly not all self employed did, but many who didn’t, never did so because their line of work, made such impossible. So the amount of honest, genuine I would suggest is lower than those who gave in to temptation of having ones cake and eating it to.
Bad enough, but some of these same taking, are the very ones who don’t declare all cash earnings, and over state expenses, thus defrauding for years those they not take dishonestly from.
Perhaps your circle of life genuinely means you don’t know of such people, but I like most, have ‘yet’ to find that life here.
I’ll second that. It’s not easy being self employed. Deflating comments when trying so hard to stay afloat. Best of wishes to You Marcus.
Cash will be gone by 2023 earliest,2025 latest. By hey, what do I know?
Same here
Thank you for again tarring the self employed with the same brush. Majority of self employed are being hit harder than the employed. We only get a percentage of our overall profits and taken from up to 3 years ago. We are still left with running costs to meet out of this money and I know many self employed who for 1 reason or another aren’t eligible for any payment, not a single payment. Where as the employed have no running costs in connection to their business and then the ones that don’t work still get full benefits and their house paid for. When the 40% kicks for the self employed I’ll be paying out more to keep my business afloat than I’m getting in.
How can estate agents be allowed to stay open hardly seems essential to me as you can’t visit houses and virtual tours don’t show up damp and other faults
Yes you can visit houses .all running as normal .
My house is on the market but i wont be letting any strangers view until 2nd December
Because the virus knows that date and will be magically gone by then? Or just the government say so?
ohh them strangers…bloody hell what the fxxk is going on……….
How come you can’t get alcohol takeaway from pubs but you can get as much as you want from supermarkets seems ridiculous to me. So all that booze gets dumped and pubs and breweries go bust but can’t have lockdown for long periods as its harmful to the economy. What utter BS
Supermarket is cheaper anyway but government should help hospitality more when they have to waste so much beer etc
It seems crazy that they are letting builders, window fitters, carpenters and other trades still carry on but it’s good to see that they now don’t want people like tradesmen going in customers houses. If they did carry on going in other peoples houses they will just spread the virus at an alarming rate am. Considering that alot of suppliers to the building trade up north are going to shut down as my son is in the trade and was told he can’t get materials from Thursday. Am glad I cancelled my builders coming in my house this week and next my advice minimise contact with tradesmen as they go and see multiple customers a day.
Yes because they need to earn! Builders merchants are open and government says to carry on working if you can’t wfh. Why is everyone trying to stop people earn a living? You can work in houses and still be safe. After all schools are still open!
Trades are allowed into your house .
Trades can go into people’s homes? It’s confirmed on gov website.
Strange really , trades people can work together in people’s houses but family of more than 1 can’t visit each other ,,, bloody farce
Will council car parks be free of charge as last time?
Good joke Dave!!
Ha yeah rightio same a council tax reduction ha i love your joke it’s priceless
Does anyone know what Bob Seeley will be voting today – a for to lock down the island; a no against lockdown or an abstention???
Bob who??
LoL at the people behaving like a child who does not want to go to bed and trying to find loop holes.
Seriously use your brain. Just reduce your contact with other people as much as you can and if you need to go out wash your hands and wear a mask. This is all it takes.
Yes it means a few minor sacrifices like missing a mates birthday or not decorating the kitchen. Far better than sacrificing loved ones so you can go to the pub or get your hair cut.
Well said John, unfortunately common sense and consideration for others flew out the window years ago.
I already reduce my contact with people, I haven’t left the house since last December and survive on a diet of pot noodles.
Why does this bother you ????
Cheating the system ,without a licence to sell food.
He does have a licence you should really get your facts straight. It’s hard enough for businesses at the minute with you writing wrong information.
Get a life
no ones cheating the system you no nothing on this so do one
You do not need a” licence” to sell tinned food here- if it were fresh food, and if there was any sort of preparation of food, that would be a different matter.
Will Lynbottom recycling centre remain open. I have a slot booked for end of this week?
Ask them! Better be as fly tipping will increase. It’s COVID safe there so no reason to close but wouldn’t surprise me!
yes due to continuous slot bookings.
They’ve said this better than boris Johnson!!!
I hear most of the shops are staying open this time ,with the attitude sod it we’re staying open , this lockdown ha ha will not have the impact Borris wants it to just mark my words and wait to see
look here you want to get your facts right before you start shooting you mouth off behind a com screen
Shouting there mouths of ain’t going to change anything people have no comensense or care for each other, were in this situation again because people dont stick to the rules. We should be looking out for each other this virus is not going away, I dont want to see any of my family or friends with it. Think of the NHS just cast your mind back to those pictures we see of people in hospital, all people are thinking about is Christmas and what they can buy. YOU CAN NOT BUY YOUR HEALTH. so stop being selfish and dont panic buy. I’m sure seeing our family and friends is the best present ever.
Are opticians to remain open dies anyone know?
Can dog grooming parlours open
You lot must be on a different planet, wakey Wakey ffs!!
Good for them. I hope it makes their business survive.
why the fxxk why ?never worked last time wont work this time in out in out wont make any fxxcking difference..just destroying people lives and jobs
