Both Red Funnel and Wightlink are facing cancellations to their cross-Solent services this morning (Wednesday) owing to foggy conditions.
Red Funnel’s East Cowes to Southampton sailings scheduled to depart at 01:30 and 04:30 have been cancelled along with their Southampton to East Cowes sailing scheduled to depart at 03:00.
Wightlink’s Portsmouth to Fishbourne sailing scheduled to depart at 03:00 has been cancelled, as well as the Fishbourne to Portsmouth sailing scheduled to depart at 04:00.
Both ferry operators apologise for the cancellations.
Wightlink has said:
“If you’re travelling today, please check in as usual for your booked sailing time while our teams work hard to return to our scheduled timetable”.
UPDATE @ 05:20 – Foggy conditions persist meaning Red Funnel has now cancelled the 04:30 from Southampton and the 06:00 from East Cowes.
Wightlink has also cancelled the 05:00 sailing from Portsmouth and the 06:00 from Fishbourne.
Further cancellations are expected, but the fog should burn off as the run rises allowing services to return to normal as the morning progresses.
UPDATE @ 06:19 – Wightlink has confirmed the 06:00 and 07:00 sailings from Portsmouth have now also been cancelled.
UPDATE @ 07:49 – Red Funnel has now suspended both its vehicle ferry service and Red Jet hi-speed passenger service until further notice, as dense fog continues to shroud the Solent.
UPDATE @ 11:26 – All routes have now resumed, but with varying delays.

Don’t worry, the Labour members have made a commitment to a strong motion to regulate the ferries, so fog won’t be a problem in the future!
If Labour have anything to do with it,
the service will get worse and prices will

To be fair, it may be the Harbour Masters of both ports stopping them from running for safety reasons.
Quite often the hovercraft will continue as it doesn’t go into the actual harbour.
It would be nice if this gad been reported by QHM or the Echo.
What ever happened to radar.
If they can’t find their way along a route they navigate umpteen times a day, with the aid of radar, should they really be in command at all?
Living in West Wight, we usually use the Yarmouth – Lymington route. Never yet have I been delayed or had a cancellation on this route, neither have I known it be stpped by weather.
