WARRIORS END THE SEASON IN STYLE AT BUXTON AFTER SETBACK AT STOKE

wightlinkwarriorslogoThe Wightlink Warriors speedway team travelled north at the weekend for their final 2 National League meetings of the 2016 season and returned home coming to terms with having secured very mixed results.

Those 2 matches for the Warriors were at Stoke on Saturday evening and at Buxton the following afternoon and about 30 or so Warriors fans made the journey too to lend their vocal support.

The first meeting against Stoke proved to be somewhat challenging on a difficult track, lighting failures and in general a disappointing evening, despite the Warrior’s fans doing their upmost to raise their spirits. The Warriors simply could not get to grips with the Stoke track nor the Potters’ impressive Tony Atkin who went through the match unbeaten. Only skipper James Cockle and the impressive Sam Woods put up any real resistance to the Potters who ran out comfortable 54-33 winners.

It was a completely different story though when, on Sunday afternoon, the Warriors raided the beautiful Peak District to take on the Buxton Raiders and they rewarded their travelling fans by producing watched a fine performance. The Warriors were once again led by a superb performance from skipper James Cockle, who was only beaten by Buxton’s Tom Woolley, and step up and take a bow, Warrior Nathan Stoneman who whacked in 16 points for the Warriors with a dominating performance. It was great to watch Layne Cupitt’s confidence grow as the meeting went on and his final score of 7 was just rewards for the Warrior who came 6th in GB under 19 Championship representing the Isle of Wight and the Warriors.

In all, the Warriors quickly put behind them the disappointment of the Stoke meeting the night before to win quite comfortably at the beautiful Buxton track 33 – 57. A fitting end to a fantastic season of speedway for the Warriors.
